What's the disadvantages to going with the TT1. I intend on using this for firing my Elinchrom Ranger RX's at hypersync and also using with my 580EXII?

Thanks for any thought.

The Flex uses (2) standard AA batteries and the Mini uses a single CR2450 or CR2454. Obviously, the "mini" is smaller but may only be used as a transmitter where the Flex can be used as both. The Flex would be advantageous in the fact that it could be used as both and could be a backup in the event you had multiple or had a spare unit in the bag.

Cheers,
Eric

Thanks Eric

The weight, or lack there of, of the mini is really appealing.

It's nice. It's practically unnoticeable, and that is its whole advantage.

That said, the battery thing is something to consider because you can't just draw from your stock of rechargeables. If I had it to do over again, I don't know which way I would go, but I suspect I would still go with the Mini because I don't need two E-TTL receivers. I will probably add one or two Plus2 units, and when shooting with those I can use the TT5 as a transmitter if I want.

Thanks for the comment

I've been dealing with a trigger systems that uses the RC2 batteries, so I'm use to it.

Mini, so much smaller and nicer. You can buy rechargable batteries for the mini.

HI Bobby

rechargables. My understanding, at least with some of the electronics I use, is that rechargables don't have enough output at the voltage.

Have you tried them?

thanks
Ralph

The biggest disadvantage is that the PW will likely fry your 580EXII.

Hi Jeff
I may not use the PWs with my 580, it's just not worth the cost of the FlexxTT5, but thanks for th warning.

I went flextt5. I don't like carrying nonstandard ( to me ) batteries or extra chargers. It's nice only having to worry about AAs.

As everyone had said, using a TT5 as the transmitter is advantageous in that you use AA batteries instead of the coin battery (I buy these in bulk for my TT1). Plus, it has the swing out antenna, so you might get better range with it.

Also, the cool thing is that you get the 3.5mm jacks on the TT5, one for the camera and one for flash. So you can run a drive cable if you wanted to use another TT1/TT5 to trigger the TT5 on the camera for remote shutter release, or you could run a 3.5mm/3.5mm sync cable from the TT5 to say a ring flash (instead of using the PC sync port on the camera).

On the topic of ring flash, the TT5 has one negative aspect in it's size (not weight). If I run the TT5 as the transmitter on my camera, and have the camera mounted to my ABR800 ring flash, it can't get the camera lens deep into the ring flash so there is a change for vignetting depending on the lens.
