I shoot sports, and shoot exclusively in RAW, but was thinking of trying out JPEG just to see what I can get, but was wondering if there were any "preferred" JPEG settings, like quality, Picture Style mods, etc. I had a 7D, and one of the preferred settings was to bump up the sharpening on the Standard Picture style from the default of 3 to 4.
Any help appreciated...
Hmm, I stopped shooting jpegs when I got my first DSLR about 6 years ago.
However, I if I did switch to jpeg shooting I wouldn't "typically" shoot at less than the Large/Fine Quality setting. I don't use DSLRs for "snapshot" shooting -- when I grab my camera it is to capture photos in a meaningful way, even if I do end up with some that are less-than-compelling.
However, there are accomplished photogs here, especially ones that are "working photogs" in various fields, sports being one of them, who shoot smaller jpegs because that is what they need to deliver to a client or editor, and once they have done that, their job is done -- no need to mother or even keep the shots unless an archive is called for.
As to in-camera settings, thought really should go into these things since jpegs have less latitude for processing than Raw files, and also since the main reason for shooting jpegs is for some kind of convenience, such as less need for post-processing.
So that being said, I don't think anyone can tell you what you should prefer for your Picture Style and the internal settings -- take some photos and decide if you would prefer. Maybe Standard with some tweaking? Maybe Landscape? Since there is no "Sports" PS, well, you are on your own there!
Of course it's important that you get a good White Balance with jpegs!
As to things like intermediate ISOs, High ISO noise reduction, HTP and the other "special" settings, in general for jpegs do what works, but I've been so "Raw-oriented" that I really don't have any more suggestions!
