I am going from a 7d to a 1D MKiv. My primary walk around lens has been the Ef-S 15-85is. I like having the wide angle when I needed it so my initial thoughts were to go with the 16-35 but I am oh so tempted by the double rebates right now on the 24-70. Thoughts anyone?

Sounds like you will take more landscape photos than portraits,
I would suggest you to get 16-35 if your photos will mostly landscape.

If you don't care the 24-70 MKII and you are really like portraits,
24-70 would be a good choice(I just get one last week),
distortion would be less on this lens

But if you are not sure you may or may not get 24-70 MKII later,
then it's better to wait

If you want ultra-wide, then you want to have 16-35mm. In your case, 1DMIV has a crop factor of 1.3x, you will want 16-35mm for your landscape shots.

The 16 35 is a wide angle zoom, while the 24 70 is a standard-midtele zoom. I think that the 24 70 would better suit your needs as a walk-around lens.

But it all comes down to what you want to shoot.

The best question to ask yourself would be, "What range of FL do you shot at, and do you need the wider 16, or the longer 70?"

From your signature, I'm seeing that you already have the 24-70L & 50 1.4 and since you will still be dealing with a 1.3 crop factor, the 16-35II would fit the bill. I'm thinking it would give you an effective range from 20-45mm. It is also quite a bit lighter than the 24-70!

If you need time to evaluate it and are a Gold or Platinum CPS member, they will ship you out one for a n evaluation period. I don't have any crop sensor cameras, but my 16-35II is a very sharp copy on FF.

Congrats on the MkIV! I've borrowed one from CPS and it's a fast piece of machinery!

I need to edit my sig. I sold my 24-70 last year. I had it on a crop body and it wasn't wide enough. I used the sale to fund my 70-200.

You loved the 15-85mm for its 15mm AOV; you were dissatisfied with 24mm for its narrower AOV on the APS-C body.
15mm AOV on APS-C is same as 24mm AOV on FF is same as 19mm AOV on APS-H -- you'll love
24mm AOV on APS-C is same as 38mm AOV on FF is same as 29mm AOV on APS-H -- you'll not be satisfied with less wide

Take that as key factor in your decision making! .

Thinking about it more, I am leaning towards a 16-35mm, perhaps finding a nice second hand one! I was doing APS-C and H math half the night. :-)
I also remember the 24-70 being a paperweight (a sharp one at that but still very heavy)
Thanks for all the suggestions.

You might want to think about the zooms with 17-55 or so, if the image circle is sufficient.

Do your math... The 24-70L provides a wider view on a full frame camera than does the 15-85mm lens (which you seem to like) on a crop camera.

It will, however not be anywhere nearly as long on the telephoto end.

Obviously, the 16-35mm will be a LOT WIDER on the short end and have a LOT LESS reach on the long end.

It depends on your needs and your style of shooting.

IMO, a UWA (16mm is UWA on a full framer) is a specialty lens that many photographers use to produce absolutely boring landscapes. The way to use a UWA lens for landscapes is to include a very prominant close feature (rock, bush, etc.) in the image. The way NOT TO USE a UWA lens is to try to capture a wide vista ending up with lots of boring sky, empty foreground and a tiny strip of interest across the center of the frame.

However, that's exactly how most UWA afficinados tend use the UWA lens.

Here’s what I would do: 16-35L for 1Div nd 24-70L on FF. Personally, I’ve used a 17-40L before and it’s too wide for a walkaround. 16-35L would be similar.

I thought I could replace a 24-70L with a 16-35L but it never happened after owning a 17-40L. So for a 1.3 crop i’d go with a 16-35L since a 24-70L wont be wide anough.

whazzat?!
15mm on APS-C or 24mm on FF both see 84 degree diagonal AOV.

15mm on crop = 24MM on FF. Or VERY close.
