Just a heads up for anyone wanting to purchase a 16GB Sandisk CF card. Yesterday, I received my 16GB CF card in the mail and to my surprise when I opened up the package the card itself says UDMA 7. I spoke with Sandisk to verify it's authenticity and this is what they had to say;

"We have reviewed the pictures of the memory card and verified the details. You have a legitimate SanDisk memory card. Earlier we used to manufacture UDMA 6 memory card which you can see on the packaging, however you have received our latest memory card which is UDMA 7."

But it still lists it as a 90MB/s card, so whats the difference between UDMA 6 and 7?

Improved reading/writing speed in camera's that support UDMA 7 like the 7D. The relative speed is capped at 90MB/s, but an UDMA7 capable card should still be faster in camera's that support the feature.

Although, I have not personally tested the actual card's speed capabilities.

Did you buy this directly from Amazon (ie. Amazon was the seller) or a third party through Amazon?

From what I read here UDMA7 maxes out at 167 MB/s

What is UDMA 7?
Answer:
UDMA 7, which stands for Ultra Direct Mode Access 7, is the latest transfer mode under the UDMA interface. UDMA 7 allows a maximum transfer rate of up to 167MB/sec. This can be compared to the previous UDMA mode, UDMA 6, which allowed transfer rates of up to 133MB/sec.

The 7D supports UDMA 7, but only if the latest 1.2.5 firmware has been installed. Check your 7D when you get it. http://www.learn.usa.canon.com …6_eos7d_firmware125.shtml (external link)

You should get at least a 8MB CF card if you shoot RAW. 16GB or 32GB might be preferred due to the the large file sizes from the 18MP sensor.

As for speed, I would say about 400x minimum, but not all 400x cards are created equal. Slower cards will also work but of course take longer to upload photos or clear the camera's buffer. Faster cards like 600x or even 1000x will clear the buffer faster, but if you don't shoot long bursts, you will rarely fill the buffer.

Lots of good info on card performance on this site:

To get the best bang for the buck, make sure you have UDMA 7 end-to-end (camera body, card, reader).

Thanks - very helpful. Got 4 x 32gb Extreme Pros for my 1DX. Two were UDMA 6 and two were UDMA 7. I was slightly worried the UDMA 7s were not legit...!

They redo the labels periodically to try to stay ahead of the counterfeiters.

I just received a pair of Transcend 32GB 400X cards that are also labelled UDMA7..... Sounds like all the main CF card makers will be highlighting this 'feature'....
