Here is a very nice suction cup mount: LINK (external link) for $40. It's surprisingly stout and solid.

It's primarily designed for the Contour helmet camera, but I've used mine to hold a 7D with several different (not light) lenses, mounted on roof or hood or windshield, at very high speeds, and it's worked perfectly every time.

Why did you have to post that! I had no intention of buying anything for my camera for several weeks and I just caved.

You know full well you wouldn't have lasted several weeks. If it hadn't been this, it would have been something else.

I would barely trust a rebel on that thing let alone a prosumer camera like the 7D or 5D. I own a contour and that thing weighs slightly over a quarter of a pound. So that mount was designed to hold something that's 6 times lighter than a 7D without a lens. Now I'm sure you could mount it on there and it won't break statically but no way would I expect it to with stand the vibrational stresses seen with a moving car. Not to mention if you mount it in a position that puts a large torque on the arm. I am all for doing things on the cheap but risking my expensive camera falling from a moving car because I decided to cheap out on a mount is not a smart move in my opinion.

I have seen DSLR rigs for race cars and they usually consist of at least 3 50+ lb suction cups triangulated to the tripod mount and hot shoe of the camera. Yeah it's probably a little over kill but it will cost you a heck of a lot less then a new camera and whatever lens you lose in the process.

Sorry for the rant but I don't want to see a "hey look at my destroyed camera" thread in the near future.

If you have a decent ball head for a tripod somewhere I would go with something like this for a little more security. http://www.bhphotovideo.com …B_Super_Grip_Junior_.html (external link)

Hey, rant all you want - OK by me! Remember the OP was asking about something low cost for low speed, light stress use.

I'm not suggesting it's ideal, or even proper. But it's my equipment at risk, and all I can say is - I've DONE IT. I've used it repeatedly as I described (high speed, smooth track) and it has worked fine. I do use a tether to additional suction cups if I can - but the mount suction cup has never come loose.

The mount is CLEARLY capable of holding a bigger load than a Contour. I think they just bought a design and put a Contour adapter on it. With just a contour on it, I've used them externally mounted during Tough Truck competitions and it's never come loose even pounding over jumps, etc. I would NOT try THAT with a DSLR though!

EDIT: I just checked - the mount is built by Panavise (external link). They say it's good for a 3 lb. load, so, far, far more than a Contour weighs. Of course, I've gone way over the limit with it, but I've always been a strong proponent of risk-taking. It's also only $25 direct from Panavise (external link) without the Contour mount!

GoPro Hero ;-)a Light, robust, water resistant and gives surprisingly good (broadcast quality) images and all for the price of a DSLR mount you would trust.

I''ve used the go pro suction mounts before, I just built a platform out of 3 of them for extra power
