Last summer I started experiencing shutter lag intermittently. Due to known issues with the shutter (though a little early at 12000 clicks), I sent it off to a local repair guru with a solid reputation...he's been repairing pro equipment for over 30 years in the Chicago area and he's repaired my film cameras in the past, so I trust him.

He could not find any problems and their are no errors logged on the camera. He could not reproduce the symptom. He performed a basic cleaning and service and sent it back.

I've tried a number of things to resolve the problem:

  • Changed battery
  • Tried various lenses (including a basic 50mm 2.5 prime)
  • Put it on manual focus (still occurred in some cases)
  • Turned off IS (where applicable)
  • Master reset (painful)
  • New CF card
  • Remote shutter release (problem does not occur on remote release)
The shutter hasn't been as bad lately, but I have had a number of auto focus hunt issues in full light. What I find is that the lenses will not hunt through the full focal range, but it gets stuck and won't rescan the full range until you adjust it manually and then press the shutter again. Also, I get a fair amount of false positive focal locks.

Honestly, the bizarre and inconsistent nature of the symptoms almost reads like a chip damaged by an ESD. But I have no experience with ESD damaged digital sensors. I have some experience with ESD damaged microprocessors for both servers and PC's as well as a microwave. For instance, when you press the 1 minute button on the microwave, sometimes it gives you a minute and sometimes it puts you in pizza mode. When pressing cancel, sometimes the light goes on and sometimes it cancels. Its caused by damaged pathways on the board.

Any thoughts/ideas? I've been thinking about upgrading to a FF 5DMKII, but I'm way ahead of schedule for that.

Sounds similar to the problem this member has encountered. His 40D behaves perfectly as new but his friend's 40D suffered from the same symptoms as yours. Hopefully he has found the root cause of the problem.

A few months ago, I was having a lot of issues with intermittent focus hunting on my 50D. There was no discernible pattern I could identify, and it happened with all three of my primes (28, 85, and 200). On the forum, someone suggested to look for debris on the focus screen; stating that the AF system somehow uses the focus points in the viewfinder to compute focal distance. (I still don't know if this is true or not) That said, I took a look through my viewfinder, and there was a big 'ole stinking hair cutting directly across the center focus point. Normally, I have a fair amount of debris inside the body because I change lenses quite a bit outdoors and I usually blow the body out every couple of weeks. So, having a hair in the viewfinder is something I usually disregard to the point where I don't even notice it anymore.

Anyways, I pulled the focus screen out. Blew on it, re-installed it, powered up, and camera was working properly again.

To this day, I'm not sure if the hair on the focus screen was actually the cause of the issue, or if it was just one of those "oddball" things that corrected itself or just my general ignorance.

Anyway, i hope my post helps.
