A friend of mine is letting me try out his 24 105. First of all, I would want a little more reach, but I thought I would test it against my Tamron 17 50 vc. Both were set at f4, 35/32mm, 100 iso. What do you all think? I don't see that much difference to justify buying this lens. I'd rather put the $$ toward another tamron that would give me more zoom. I shoot with a T1i. thanks

I don't think the IQ is all that difference, but they are really two different lenses. A wide, fast, "EF-S" lens or a long focal length, EF, f4 zoom. It should really be about do you want the FL of that lens or another. I don't recall a current Tamron lens that which match the 24-105 range.

Want Zoom..? get Tamron 70-300 VC for about $300 used. That will complement your existing lens and you get more value for money.

Oh I agree, I want something with more reach than 105. He's just trying to get me into an L lens for a good price. I was just doing this for a IQ comparison. I'm actually thinking of going with the tamron 70-300 to give me a long focal length. I really thought that I would see a big difference with the L lens since I did what I could to use the same settings for each shot.

I have both and I really like the 24-105 better, even though IQ is comparable. It has more reach and focuses fast.

this little test was all about the IQ. I like the 17 at the open end and wouldn't sacrifice it for the focal length of the 24-105. I believe my best bet is to compliment the 17-50 with the Tamron 70-300.

This is the wrong forum for this topic. This should have been posted in the EF and EF-S lens section and not the Lens Sample Photo archive.
