OK, this is probably a noob question but I've had the G12 for a while now and as my signature suggests, I use a Giottos MTL 9360B tripod with a Manfrotto head. No matter what I shoot, I always get that little shaking camera ikon showing up on the left bottom of the screen. This doesn't change on a completely calm day (or inside shots) with faster shutter speeds. I have the IS mode off though I've tried it enabled as well.... same thing. Do those of you with the G11 or 12 see the same thing? I think the details in my photos have improved since joining POTN, but I realize this is subjective. Any suggestions and/or comments are welcome. Here's one I took today:

PS: I do use a remote shutter release.

There is an internal algorithm to trigger the "shake" warning. It is probably based on focal length and shutter speed. The oft-quoted rule of thumb is to keep shutter speed faster than 1/focal length but I've not attempted to reverse engineer Canon's algorithm. The camera is not smart enough to know if it is already on a tripod.

Gordon,

So the camera isn't sensing shake.... just doing the math? Thanks so much. I just did an experiment a few minutes ago in TV and AV modes.and I can make the icon go away by raising the ISO and then the shutter speed in TV. I did notice in AV mode, even at the widest aperture, I was getting under 1/60 shutter speed...and that was setting off the "sensor".

If it's a math thing and not an actual sensor, I can relax...

Thanks again,

I exercised my G1X and concluded that the camera shake icon is indeed activated only by shutter speed as compared to focal length. The relationship is different with IS turned on -- roughly a 3:1 ratio. The way I think of it is that the shake icon is activated when the shutter speed is less than 1/(equivalent 35mm focal length) when IS is off but 3x that shutter speed (means a slower shutter is OK) when IS is turned on. All these values are rounded off so the math does not appear to be precise.

One example is: shake icon comes on at 1/60 second for 50mm equivalent focal length (~mid zoom) with IS turned off but 1/20 second with IS turned on.

I'll get this better documented and post in my blog in a few days.

Here's the blog post -- including the "data": http://lightdescription.blogspot.com/2012/03/g1x-shake-icon.html (external link)
