I've been tempted to switch to the dark side since the D800 announcement. I'm considering getting the Nikon trinity

14-24mm f/2.8
24-70mm f/2.8
70-200mm f/2.8 VR II

is there any significant difference between Nikon and Canon? my 70-200 II is amazing, I'd hate to part with it. although I heard the 14-24 is way better than any Canon UWA.

I have heard/read that too (I am saving for the 14-24 now!) I will certainly not be buying a Nikon to put it on though, a simple cheap adapter will do me just fine.

The most noise about the 14-24 was made by the company that manufacture and sell the adapters to mount it onto canon bodies...

Yes I still think it is better than the 16-35, but not by that much, and nikon lack good alts for 17 and 24tse lenses

The Nikon 14-24 is amazingly sharp.

Sharpness isn't the only quality you want in a lens.

The 14-24 is better than any UWA zoom Canon makes.

The 24-70 is sharper than the Canon MK1, we will need to wait and see for the MK2.

The 70-200 VR II is slightly less sharp than the Canon 70-200 MKII.

Today the 14-24mm and 24-70mm were delivered to me. I unboxed them and they looked lonely for their 70-200mm VR II brother, so I had to order it as well. From all that I've seen the 70-200mm VR II compares favorably with the Canon with the exception of that "focus-breathing" issue when focusing within 10' away. Be sure to read the reviews to make sure that oddity won't be a stumbling block to you. I don't think it's going to bother me. This looks like a fair-minded review: http://www.bythom.com/nikkor-70-200-VR-II-lens.htm (external link)

I'm considering the same thing, but like someone else mention, they don't have the 17 TS-E :(

Let me know how you like the switch (if you do).

You might want to rethink this. I have the Nikon 14-24 on my 5D2 and was about to buy a cheap adapter till I researched it and read the horror stories of those who did and got chipped off paint on their sensors and half of their frame out of focus. The tolerances are tight, and you'll want the precision machined $250 German made Novoflex. I'm very happy with the results, but the whole set up is such a pain in the ass (manually focus using live view, and you can only guess at the aperature) that I can't bring myself to sell my 16-35 even though I don't use it.

Thanks for the information. The lack of AF is simply a non issue for me [I currently a Contax 25mm f2.8 with no trouble whatsoever) also my wide-angle lenses rarely, if ever go wider than F8, they live stopped down and are used off tripods.
However your comments regarding the cheap adapters are of far more concern - I will have to have a look into that - thanks!

+1
even with Novoflex the Nikon lens and my 5d2 did not fit right. Therefore, there were a lot of unusable images.

Really? I've been using this set up on the 1Ds 3 and no issues with clearance.

This just in, Canon 5DX: A New Hope, will be coming in September. It will have 45mp and a DR of 14.5. It will be accompanied by a new EF 14-24 2.8 that accept FILTERS.

I can't go into further details but hang in there Republic Canon Rebels. Don't give in to the Dark side. ;)

i have given up mixing Nikon lenses to Canon body idea long ago already. I don't use UWA lenses that much anyway...
