I would normally agree to this. But the ISO is so much better on the 5diii, that you can work with the f4 and get even better results than a 7d and f2.8. Then later on maybe get a 70-200mm f4l if you need more than 105mm.

What is it that you think you are agreeing or disagreeing with? The simple fact is that you can buy a 7D, a 24-70 and a 70-200 for $150 less than the cost of the 5DmkIII kit that includes the 24-105.

Which one of those options a person chooses is up to them but the OP, as an example, lists field sports in their list of uses and 105mm on a full frame camera is simply not going to handle field sports. Even 200mm is often short on a FF so they would be looking at something like a 300/4 or a 100-400 and now the price for the kit is in the neighborhood of $6000. if they are willing and able to pay that much for a kit then they will have a very nice kit. But if they can't afford that much then there are other options that are much less expensive.

I agree the 7d is the more logical choice. but having had both I think you would get much better images with a 5diii and 24-105 than a 7d and 24-70. But you would only have 24-105mm though.

Ever changing.

Would you buy a 7d or 5d 3 if you shoot field sports, court sports and some general portrait. Not making a living at it.

What lenses do you already have and what lenses do you plan to buy? If you don't already have a 70-200 f/2.8L IS II you could get that + 7D for the price of the 5DIII. Or a 7D + 135 f/2L + 85 f/1.8 + money left over. Or 7D + 200 f/2.8L + 85 f/1.8 + money left over, etc. You get the idea. If buying a 5DIII severely restricts your lens choices you're better off with a 7D + lenses.

It depends on whether or not money is an issue. If it is, I hate to spend most of the budget on a 5D3 and left with little money on good glass. I'll take 7D+excellent glass over 5D3+mediocre glass any day. :D

Why? FF is better quality on any mediocre glass. The proof is in every 7D and 5DII/III thread. This logic is awkward...for the OP sure go with the 7D combo since youre not a pro or aspiring to be one or if money is tight. But IQ wise good glass on a 7D crop sensor is just jokes. I use 24L and 50L on my 60D...no quality difference from the non-L versions. Full-frame = better, period. Youd take a 7D any day? 5D3 on a $100 50mm 1.8 will destroy the IQ of a 7D with L glass. Do the tests firsthand before you decide, dont base it on forum posts.

I think the opposite. I'd rather have average glass and full frame rather than excellent glass and a crummy sensor.

This. 7D or not, the crop sensor is crummy unless youve never seen a 5D2/3 photo. Sure it's decent during daytime at low ISO but damn near every camera nowadays is. Once the sun starts going down you're gonna go home? Nah I plan to shoot more ;)

What good is a great sensor if you only have money left over for a 50mm f/1.8 that won't reach far enough to get a good shot? If I'm shooting field sports I'll pick a 7D + 70-200 f/2.8L IS II over a 5DIII + 50mm f/1.8 any day.

Before putting in suggestions based on our own preferences, why don't we wait for the OP to let us know what lenses he has, what kind of budget he's looking at, etc.?

Yohan you missed the point. No one is saying use a 50mm 1.8 on a 5D3...the point is itll look better than the 7D regardless of glass. And if you read you'd see I said "for the OP go with the 7D combo"...these arent based on my own preferences, its based on facts, and common sense. It was toward cpcrebel not anyone else.

No youre right the 7D looks similar to a 5D3, lmao. I must be the one drinking. Lets all go buy 7D's now.

Wow, like to put words into people's mouth much, eh?

People using superlatives are the ones drinking the wrong kool-aid. Better, yes. "Destroy"? Hardly. There will be conditions/situations that will expose the weakness of the high-density crop sensors. But if/when those conditions/situations aren't meant, the difference is negligible, especially if you're not printing large or viewing beyond the standard 1920x1200 resolution of most LCD screens.

As already noted, and you obviously didn't read any of my responses beforehand, if budget wasn't a concern and if he already has the right lens line-up, then 5D3 all the way (or why stop there, get the 1DX). But if he doesn't have the lenses to support what he wanted to shoot, then there's absolutely no point for hollering/hootin' "5D3 all the way.. rah rah rah, destroy. Yarrr!" banter that's being tossed out there.

Send a PM to him next time, bud.

Since you're posting on a public forum and responding to a thread, you're putting your opinion out there, even if it's in response to someone else. Don't like to hear other people's opinion on it, then send it via PM.

OP probably saw the commotion and said, "F-this.. I'm going Nikon." ;)

So... you have the 5D3 and current collection of expensive lenses because? ;)

because I bought into the hype. I had a 50D, then got a used 100-400L. The 70-200 was just too good an offer to pass up. ($400).

I promised myself that I wanted a full frame camera, and the focus system on the 50D was just too limiting for shooting my daughter dancing, and her sports. So I bought the 5D3 kit. But then I have the money and I don't need to ask for justification to buy it.

I am curious. Do you also recommend spending the $100 for a SanDisk 90mb/s CF card, or would you say buy a $25 no name? Where do you draw the line on spending the money? What is the use of having great glass if you loose your photo's?? But what is the likelihood of that? What about the guy who spent a week on an exotic island and shot 1000 photo's on his sandisk card, and accidentally dropped it on the dock getting into the float plane.

The best camera is the one that you own. You can forever keep up with the Jones. If it's not a new lens, then your computer is too slow for the latest version of Photoshop with plug ins from every company out there promising they can improve your photo's and make you look like a super star.
