As I mentioned I would in the "Georgia Birding" thread in the Bird Talk section I went to Kennesaw Mtn. National Battlefield Park yesterday AM to see if the warbler migration had begun. Sorry to say that it has not begun yet, but while there I did run into this male Yellow-bellied Sapsucker. Some may remember from an earlier thread that I've had a female YBSS hanging around my backyard this winter so it was a nice addition to get the following captures of a male too.

1.

And a closer, slightly noisier crop of #4

The femlae YBSS in my backyard has continued to be very shy about me and my camera yielding only the next image as the best without my sliding glass door in the way. Still loving the shady side of the perch.....as always!

I hope you've enjoyed these images and thanks so much as always for viewing and commenting.

Great images Steve and what strikes me here is the amazing feather pattern on the chest feathers of the male bird. Almost like the concentric layers of a spiders web, you can see that particularly in shot #5. A pleasure to see.

You got it down to a fine art-well done, Steve, as usual.

Beautiful captures Steve. I like the way the light plays on face and breast on these.

Wow, great shots! My pick is #5 as well. And I'm just a little green with envy, because while I have seen fresh traces of their presence on some of my trees, I have yet to catch a glimpse of the birds. Well done!

Always appreciated Mark! They do have gorgeous feather markings don't they.

Thank you Andrew. Catching these winter visitors is always a treat.

I appreciate the kind words Don, and I'll have to give Mother Nature credit on the lighting as I only had one vantage point from which to shoot.

I know exactly the traces you're seeing Vivien because I've got them too! I appreciate your compliments and hope you find yours soon too.

You're very kind to say so Craig. I too am quickly becoming a sucker for sapsuckers based on those beautiful breast feathers :)

Thanks Fee. It was nice to come home w/something of significance since the warblers were in absentia.

Great shots, Steve, he has a bit more of wild look about him than his other woodpecker relatives, I think. I get one here every year, he lands on the same steel barrel and hammers away for a few days ;)

Excellent looks at the male Steve... I especially like the first image and angle... good to see these posts as mine have a couple weeks to return.
