What distance do you need from the camera? The aftermarket infrared Pearstone (external link) is my mainstay and costs under $10 (I assume the 7D has the built-in infrared "wireless" capability).

The much longer range radio-wave based Pearstone/Vello FreeWave (external link) (you want the model for the 3-pin connection on the 7D) has had much less use but if you need the distance, that would be my choice.

For exposures over 30 seconds without using bulb, there are intervalvometer remotes for a bit more such as Pearstone's ShutterBoss (external link) (many features listed, but I have no experience with it). I'd suggest getting Magic Lantern (external link) which expands the in-camera maximum exposure to several hours, but last I checked they did not (yet) have a version than runs on the 7D. It is very nice on my 60D.

If you have an iPhone/iPod/iPad try DSLR.Bot application and build your own IR transmitter.

Canon makes an infrared trigger that works very well at distances up to about 20 feet. Costs about $30.

Unless you're behind the camera. That's why proper wireless is loads better.

True, but in most cases you can set the wireless for a 2 second delay, activate from partly in front of the camera, and then get out of the way. Obviously, if you always have to be well behind the camera for some reason, this won't work.
