I just opened the box from Adorama and took out a 600EX-RT.
Only had time to do a quick test to confirm that it works.
Then took a second to run the shutter speed up to about 800. Flash worked fine in HSS mode. No cut off, nor extreme exposure. This was with the head tipped forward for direct flash.

Leaving for a long weekend but will do some more testing when I get back Tuesday and put results on my blog.

I will have to do some more testing with the second 600EX-RT.
According to the manual that's when the HSS is unavailable. However, Syl says that it worked for him.
I'll see what I find out.

Can you list the Guide Numbers in the reference section of the manual, at 24mm and at 105mm coverage areas for the 600EX?

24mm = 28/91.9
105mm = 58/190.3

I've also been messing with my 600ex-rt / 5dmkii combo all afternoon - actually I have two of the flashes, and I'm getting HSS and plenty of shutter speed.

Just did a quick test.
Mounted one 600EX-RT into a Phottix foldable Octa (similar to but smaller than Westcott Orb) and second 600EX-RT on 5DII. Slave fired at any shutter speed up to 1/8000 with proper exposure with Octa about 3 feet from subject.

Turned on flash for on camera 600, set the FEC for A to -3 and got the expected fill with all shutter speeds up to 1/8000.

I doubt the lights were working very hard based on their sound when firing.

The 600 in the Octa was set to 20mm zoom with the 14mm spreader deployed. It fills the octal nicely.

This was without a diffusion panel or grid attached.

The octal comes with both and will do some testing with pix when I get back into town Tuesday.

yep. Just to confirm, I am getting full HSS with the off camera slave as the main light. I'm SO STOKED that this is working on my 5D2, despite the manual stating that it won't.

I've got to do some more testing, but it looks like their new group mode isn't working correctly with the 5dmkii. So currently I don't think there is a way of mixing ettl and manual "groups" unless I upgrade to the 5dmk3. :confused:

Wil,
That will take some more testing.
I changed the power using the screen that shows the various groups.
I set group A to -3 and left group B at full. That seemed to handle the ratio I wanted.
Next thing will be to see if one of the groups could be set to Manual.
I would prefer that option when using the second flash on a stand at a reception or whatever.

Still waiting for the STE3-RT so I can add it to the mix.

Yes I'm in the same boat - I'd like to have my remote flash set to Manual for receptions, etc. and my on-camera flash set to ETTL - however, I don't think that's possible with the "older" cameras. If you find a way to get it working please let me know!!

for now I will use either "all manual" or "all ETTL" flash.

Did some testing this afternoon, and just to confirm that I'm getting HSS off camera check out this shot:

One 600ex-rt on 5Dmkii as master (did not fire)
One 600ex-rt off camera fired into 45" reflective umbrella, Manual 1/2 power or full power

1/800th SEC! f/2.0 ISO 160

I have been getting great results with a 430exii and 580exii with HSS using mini/flext tt5s. But good to see the 600 works as well :)

When people catch on to how easy these new 600ex-rt flashes are to operate, no one is gonna want to mess with any other triggering system. Think about the disadvantages of the PWflex system: extra sets of batteries, extra accessories, wrapping flashes in RF-shielding socks and using eTTL cords on the receivers just to get some decent range... and to top it off... the new system is actually a little less expensive than 580ex flashes + PW units!

Hi, I'm new to the forum. I picked up a few 600ex-rt and just want to say that highspeed sync works on and off camera on the T2i up to 1/1250....just want to let entry level dslr body owners know. I had the ST-E3-R3 on order but I canx it since I do not believe it has a focus asst beam (forgive me if I'm using the incorrect term for the red light on the flash). On a side note, I just want to say that I have learned a ton from this site :)

I know this is for the 5D but I didn't want to make a new thread for the same flash.

Have a great day,

Dan
