85L Damage...Parts?

Hello all,

Well today I got a shock, a gut punch pretty much.

I've been selling some of my higher-quality gear because of personal financial pressure.

Well, I got an offer on my 85L at a low-ish price but I had to go for it, to the buyer (a POTN member) came by and was checking out the lens an noticed a loose bit and we discovered a crack on the covering right against the AF/MF switch! Agh!

Well, the sale was off and he left and I was left to be despondent. Well, I took a closer look at the problem. So, there is some platic casing that "wraps" around part of the lens and that is held in place by a few screws. It appears that it could be quite easy to remove and replace. Odd for an "L" lens but Oh Well.

The lens has never been mistreated -- the most I can figure is that this happened from switching to MF, maybe too much pressure, I don't know.

So, I plan to check with a local lens repairperson but I was wondering if there is an online source for Canon lens parts? I'd like to see what I could be getting into locally or through Canon. At this point I really can't afford a major repair bill!

So if anyone knows can you post a link?

canon has a couple parts numbers i think:
(732) 521-7230 , i think there is also an 888/800 number that i can't find thru searching now...

i'm not sure how easy it is to get a part without a number/name though...but you can always try just calling, and maybe explaining and see if that works for you...

Can you throw up a picture of the issue? Personally, I think you should really send it in for a quote--especially if you have either Gold or Platinum level CPS membership. It may only end up running $150-$200. Not a bad investment. Even if you don't have platinum CPS, you can calculate the discount based on their quote--and you can list it again-- with the thought that a platinum member here can handle the repair and save a bit extra as well.

OK, cool, the part corresponds to one in that view, it is in the first view, and it is the "collar" #CYI-2230 that shows on the bottom of the page, but I'm sure it's slightly different from the MkI version. But, a good reference, thanks!

It is honestly the easiest thing to replace on an 85L. Four screws and you're done.

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, it's just finding the part!

I believe Canon sells you the part directly. At least that's what they tried last time I needed something, although they didn't have the part I needed anymore.

The repair shops will generally not send you parts, only take on the job.

could you not just sell the thing less a repair cost Tony? I'd love an 85L, but alas, too much for me!

Well, I'd have to get an idea of what repair would cost. Factoring in shipping/insurance and then a PayPal "hit", well I don't know what costs would come to. I've been trying to get at least $1500 for the lens...

OK, thanks for that number, I did get a part#, I'm on track!

Well, hopefully I'll make it to a local camera shop this afternoon -- they'll have to order the part, but at least it should be inexpensive to get it fixed. Thanks for the input, all!

Sorry to bring this one back but how much did the CYI-2330 part end up costing? and was the Mk1 part the same as the Mk2? The rubber on mine is terrible and want to replace it.

For completeness, I rang Canon and it turns out that part number above is for a really old lens. The correct number is CY3-2154-000 Main cover assembly and it's $27.48. I tried to order two (one as spares) but they only had one in stock...

This was the horrendous drawing I sent them highlighting the part...
