I'm extremely excited because I'm going to finally photograph some covered bridges.. I love the covered bridges just about as much as old barns and here in the midwest we have several areas where you can find several covered bridges.

There is a county in Indiana, Parke County that is known to be the covered bridge captial of the world. There are currently 31 covered bridges in that area. So I heard about this area from a co-worker and he and his family go to the covered bridge festival every fall and I remembered him talking about it all the time. So I asked him where exactly it was in Indiana and I find out it's really not all that far from me, just about 3 hours. So I made reservations at a cheap motel in Rockville, Indiana and in two weeks my daughter and a friend of hers are heading down there to photograph the covered bridges and to see some of the Amish Farms.

I'm almost drooling with excitement at the photos I can take of all the bridges down there.

Here is the link to the website, they have a very cool interactive map that you can click on each of the covered bridge icons and it pulls up some photos of the bridge and history on it. This way I can see the bridges in advance and pick and choose which ones I like better so I'm not just blindly driving to them without knowing if it is one that I would like to photograph.

This is really neat, Michelle, and I'm very happy for you. I've shot covered bridges all over New England, in Madison County, Iowa, in Oregon and most recently West Virginia and Virginia, but have never spent much time in Indiana. I was not aware of so many covered bridges there. On one trip through, I saw some good potential photo ops and promised to return, but haven't yet.

Hope you have a wonderful trip.

I don't know when you're coming down here but plan your trip around all the festivals otherwise you will have a gazillion cars and tourists to deal with. The Mansfield Mushroom Festival is coming up and the Covered Bridge festival in October is a mad house.
Parke County isn't the only place that has covered bridges. We have about ninty scattered about the state. Rush County has some very nice bridges as does Brown County and Putam County, which is right next to Parke County. There are also one or two round barns in Parke County.
I would recommend getting a copy of the Indiana Covered Bridge Location Guide. I don't see an ISBN on it but the author is Arther Gatewood Jr.
If you're interested in round barns get a copy of A Round Indiana by John Hanou.

I'm coming down next weekend, April 13th, getting into Rockville later in the evening and then planning on shooting all day Saturday then leave on Sunday morning.
Thanks for the info on the other areas too! I live in the far south east suburbs of Chicago so I am very close to Indiana. I definitely want to avoid the time frame of the covered bridge festival, a friend of mine here at work goes every year and that would be a madhouse for me to even try to photograph during that time. I am hoping next weekend is very quiet, no people in my way... I get grumpy when people get in my landscape shots...LOL...

Michelle, I saw your post and it got my wheels turning. Took a drive this past holiday weekend to Lexington, VA. and I thought to myself....'wonder if there are any covered bridges in the area?'. well, found out that there was one about 40 mins away in Covington, VA. Humpback Bridge is said to be the oldest remaining arched covered bridge in the U.S.
Thanks for the idea!!! Enjoy your trip!

There are quite a few covered bridges along the Ohio/Indiana state line on the Ohio side. I think the Ohio website had a map you could print out,at least when I lived in the area around 2000.

Wow!! What an awesome covered bridge!!! I'm glad my post got your wheels turning and you found this one!!

I'm getting excited. I'm leaving this Friday evening and plan for a full day of shooting on Saturday and hopefully most of the trees should be full with leaves so I hope it will be a worthwhile trip!
