1D4 and 5D3 Processed Through LR 4.1

I decided to shoot a quick series of pictures at ISO 6400 and 12800 to compare the 1D4 and the 5D3. I don't tend to shoot small collections of nick-nacks like DPreview, so I shot my near comotose daughter who was watching TV.

I'm going to bang these out in three quick sets so you can view them side by side. I'd say functionall the 5D3 and 1D4 are very close, which suits my needs as I tend to shoot at ISO 6400 to 12800 a lot.

I'll start with ISO 6400 and zero NR. There is some input sharpening of 50/0.9 applied and no output sharpening.

I should have mentioned , the 1D4 will be first each time. Here goes ISO 12800 with the same settings.

Finally, I thought I'd re-export the 12800 shots with an NR of 15 applied just to give an even level of cleanup. I have not worked in LR 4 enough to have a feel for the NR slider yet, so this is just a random amount.

They look very close to me on the new iPad but you can definitely see the extra res of the mk3 in the fine details

I think the 1D4 looks a bit better.

I would like to see uncropped and ~50% cropped photos as well....

OK, well here are the full images from the 1D4 and 5D3 each resized to 800 pixels on the long edge.

iso 6400 looks better on the 1d4
iso 12800 looks better on 5D3

And here are 50% crops of the ISO 6400 shots. Same processing as the first time around.

IQ is very close, hard to really say which one is better ( 9.6 vs 9.5 )
MK4 seems to have a tiny bit less noise then MK3 in those 100% crop.

There is more detail on the hair in the right corner in the Mark III shot. You can see where the resolution helps with the details. Also, in the uncropped photos, you are further away with the Mark III than the Mark IV

Hm, just a quick note. I didn't shot these on a tripod, but I think I was about the same distance for every shot.

Don't forget that the 5D3 has a larger sensor than the 1D4, so when I shoot from the same position with the same focal length using the 5D3 I will get a slightly larger field of view.

When I make the crops, the higher pixel count combined with the larger sensor on the 5D3 are very nearly a wash so the crops look about the same. In fact, if you cropped the 5D3 to the same field of view as the 1D4, it would be a 13MP sensor. That's pretty close to the 16MP of the 1D4.

I just now was looking at used 1d mkiv prices, and was surprised. I didn't realize there going for $4300 used. 1d's are likely to have high shutter counts also. So to get a full frame 5diii new for $3500 isn't that bad. I know the build quality is not the same, but from image samples I've seen there really close image wise. For non professionals that's really good. Only a select few whould need the build quality of a 1d. It's nice being able to get roughly the same image quality without having to pay that much more for a 1d.

I was about to buy a MK4 until I saw the real world results of the MK3.
I prefer the smaller body / lighter weight of the MK3 over the build of the MK4.
