Need some help with settings for rugby on a cloudy day. Like these images I could but just wondering how can I improve my work?

1st Image - f4, 1/1000, ISO 640, 155mm
2nd image - f4, 1/1250, ISO 640, 232 mm

Was using a 70-200 f2.8 Sigma lens with an 1.4 extender - thought it performed well and the images were sharp but not in all cases.

Thank you once again for the help.

the extender might be adversely affect image resolution, also try using f5.6 for the crowd shots,

my attempt at rugby on a cloudy day -
