Hope this is the right section to post this one...
I will be travelling to China this summer, and I would like some advice concerning used camera shops in the area. I will be visiting Beiging, Shanghai and Hong Kong and I hope I can trade in my 1ds III for a smaller, newer camera (5d2 or 3) and lens. Any recommendations?

I don't have any suggestions other than its generally not the best idea to trade in gear. You're not going to get anywhere near what you could get selling privately.

Agreed that you won't get anything near market value trading at stores.
Just for fun, you could try some of the bigger stores in Tsim Sha tsui area in Kowloon.
Also pay a visit at Mongkok market, for some vintage cameras (think paper weights)

low end gear might be worth taking the loss on to sell at a shop but I really think it'd be worthwhile to deal with a private sale for a 1dsIII and get what it's actually worth

Thanks everybody for taking the time to respond. I was sure I would get help over here.;)
I know that I would be taking a loss trading expensive equipment...problem is that in my country, used prices on expensive gear has been diving since economic crisis came in, so I though I may get a better deal over there (since I do not feel very confident selling through the net).

Factor in your decision that the starting price of camera gear in HK is much cheaper than in the EU, meaning used prices will also be lower, combined with selling to a store for yet again, even lower, you'll probably regret it. My advice would be to sell it within the EU.

there's a building next to shanghai's north train station that sells both new and used camera gear, both modern and vintage. the bad thing is everything there, especially the vintage camera and lenses, are all overpriced. you can get it for 20% cheaper on ebay in the U.S.

hongkong is a different story, they have a lot of nice used camera shops. look up ebay auctions, especially for contax zeiss lenses. a lot of sellers are from hk and are stores in hk. prices are a bit cheaper than U.S.

when buying from asia, especially places like hk, you want to pay close attention to fungus in lens. the humid conditions have not been kind to unprotected lenses

Speaking from experience: expensive gears will hold their price very well, especially in bad economic times.
The rich will never get affected by the crysis. As long as they're your market, you're fine.
Take them to a place without crysis, you might see more market exposure (easier to sell), but at lowered value for sure.

Don't sell your used camera gear in Hong Kong, sell it at home...Price very low over there, used market..Shops,Wing Shing,Ten Cheung camera's,try Central for used!!
Also don't forget, don't go in the shops with neon lights outside ,they'll rip you off..

I just came back from hong kong and visited a few used shops. i find prices there to be generally a bit higher than what i can find on ebay. there is also a huge rise in demand for old mf camera equipment in mainland china. i visited some shops and they've all got impressive inventories at prices you'd find on ebay.
