A friend and I were out in the boonies somewhere in Southern Nevada.
All I had with me was a Sony NEX-5 camera when we encountered this family of wild horses.
I managed to stand there talking to the White Stallion, and he was content to stay and listen for a while.

and then they decided to walk slowly away after determining that I was no threat.
There was the Stallion, two Mares, and two yearlings.

The Captain and crew finally got their stuff together, now if we can only remember where we left it.

They are hard to look at being "Non Canon" pictures. I can mostly make out the unicorn pictured in front, are those bison in the background?

Sounds like an enjoyable relaxing trip you are on.

Thanks guys. :)
Yeah Chet. Unicorn up front, Bison directly behind, and two Billy Goats to the right rear. And I want a look through those glasses of yours too.

This is now one of my pet peeves. They have all kinds of excuses from they're going to starve out there on their own, to they're disturbing the environment. You know, they might kick a rock out of place or something.
As an afterthought maybe I shouldn't be trying to make friends with them while having them start to trust me because it might make it easier for them to be caught and sent to the dog food factory. :(

Yeah, BUSTED.
I had a non photographer friend shoot this shot of me. I handed him the camera and briefly explained what to do. When I went back to check his shot I found that he had focused on the door frame of the car, so I had him shoot another after I walked back out there. Meanwhile the horses are still walking away at a leisurely pace.
Here's the second shot after I shut the door so he could shoot staight through the window with no interference. My friend doesn't walk too well, so he had to shoot from inside the car.

The problem is over-population and over-grazing. They do put them up for adoption, but not enough takers. The range cattle owners don't like them either, taking food away from their critters. My take, the horses over the cattle. Who wishes to admire and take photos of cows? :-)

My wish would be to keep them both somehow. Horses are so majestic in the wild, and like you mentioned, make for some great photo ops in their natural habitat. But i'd rather eat and drink cow over horse anyday. I hear horse milk is especially nasty..;)

The sad part about this is that the horse used to be the ranchers best friend. There's got to be another answer to this.

The horse is definitely the range cattle cowboy's best friend. However, not too many answers to excessive wild horses except possibly sterilization or dog food. Thinking about it a bit, why are cattle OK to butcher, but not horses? Strange, the perception we have in this regard. This said, I am now enthused to get a few shots of mustangs hereabouts. A good excuse for a long lens, as they generally do not permit one to get very close.

Good luck, and I'd like to see what you get. :)
As for getting close, these horses didn't seem to mind my being around.
Mine were shot with a standard Sony 18-55mm kit lens. Nothing special. If I recall correctly, the NEX has a 2x conversion factor, so the max I had available was 110mm equivalent?
