How reliable and accurate is FoCal? How easy is it to do the calibration setup? Which is recommended - Focal Plus or Focal Pro? I am currently using this method http://www.northlight-images.co.uk …s3_af_micoadjustment.html (external link) and wonder if the FoCal is worth it? Thanks for the inputs

I use FoCal Pro. Very easy to setup and use and a great time saver. I have 4 bodies and 8 lenses. I was able to MA all of them in a day doing multiple trials with each body and lens.

I have noticed an improvement in the sharpness of my pics since doing the MA. So, for me it was definitely worth it.

rdalrt, do you need to change the distance between the chart and the camera according to the focal length? Thanks

Well, you don't have to, but it is recommended to use the 50x focal length rule. I just started with the shortest focal length lenses and kept backing up as I went. The distance doesn't have to be exact. Or you can even use the distance you usually shoot a lens at.

I see a few different chart types for FoCal. How do you use them?

I have the semi-automatic version, and I would recommend getting at least the PLUS-version. In my opinion semi-automatic has no advantages over doing it manually with normal printed test chart. My results were the same (which is good) and took the same amount of time to achieve it in both ways.

I'm only disappointed I went for the cheaper version, wrong place to save! (again.. ;) )

  • Version? Plus or Pro. Like Mikko says, fully automatic really is worth the extra.
  • Target? A suitable target for you to print out is included in the package. I stuck mine to some foam-core board for stability.
  • Distance? I started with my 300mm + 2xTC and put the target across the garden. Only 20x focal length, but it was all I could manage. As I went down in focal length I moved the target (mounted on a second tripod) closer.

I know it's late, but good to know:

From Raikan Focal site:

Can I upgrade?

Of course. There is no upgrade fee other than the price difference between the versions. So, for example, if you purchase a license for the Standard version, and after using it you decide you would like to upgrade to the Pro version, you simply pay the difference and Reikan will supply you with a new license enabling the Pro version features.

You can do this from our License Management System.
