40D Autofocus problem - only in program mode?

Hopefully this is a silly question, but I've noticed that my 40D will no longer autofocus in any of the program modes. And I don't mean it's hunting - the autofocus doesn't do anything at all.

It works fine in all of the pre-set modes, but once I go to any of the program modes north of the green box on the dial, no more autofocus. Lens does not make a difference - I tried 3 different lenses & get the same behavior on all of them.

I also tried resetting everything back to default in the menu ('Clear all camera settings'), just in case I set something wrong, but made no difference.

Did I make a setting change in some mysterious menu that I'm not aware of, or does this seem to be a problem with my camera? Firmware is 1.0.8, if that makes any difference.

Did you try pulling both batteries?

Just an outside chance here, it shouldn't be the case as you restored the camera to default settings, but have you tried the backbuttons (the two at the top right on the back of the camera) to see if the AF has been assigned to them? Like I say, that shouldn't be the case if you are back at default settings, but it should be checked out just in case.

I never use any of the full auto / preset modes, but I believe they overide some of the functions set for the creative modes. That would explain why AF still works normally in those modes, if it is overiding back button focus and sticking it back on the shutter button.

Like I say, this may be a long shot but I can't think of any other reason the camera would do this.

What he said. There's probably a custom function set to put the AF on one of the back buttons.

Woohoo! Thanks, SP! That's it. I didn't reset the custom creative modes (saw those were in a separate reset category just now), and looks like AF is assigned to the back buttons.
