Hey guys and gals,
in LR4 under soft proofing there's an option for Color Space profile, what's the best option for this AdobeRGB1998 or sRGB?

Thanks

Soft proofing is a preview of how your image will look after it is exported in a particular space or more importantly how it will look printed. This being so, it only makes sense to soft proof to the same space in which you will be exporting. So your question becomes the more important one, "What's the best option for an export space?" The answer is determined by what you intend to do with the image. For web posting, emailing/MSMing or having prints made by a commercial lab, it is important to use sRGB. For home printing with a good quality inkjet (6 or more ink colors) or for lithographic press, choose Adobe RGB (although if the printer is at home it makes more sense to print directly from LR in the printer's space without exporting (saving) a rendered image.)

So I haven't gotten and installed LR4 yet (any day now) but Elie, is it true then that the SoftProofing includes Color Space softproofing in the way that you can do with DPP and ACR? It sounds like it does, which is a good thing:)!

Yes it does, but whereas ACR can only show three output spaces and DPP four, LR can use any RGB space that you have the profile for, so if you're into Chrome 2000 D65 RGB you can soft proof it. It also has an Out Of Gamut alarm overlay that can be turned on. As an added bonus the probe numbers under the histogram change from percentages to 0-255 scale values. (It took me years to get used to the percentages and I'm still not comfortable with them.)

At first I was editing the sRGB proof copies of images for the web in order to get rid of the OOG alarm and feeling very frustrated because I was ruining the images. Then I saw a video by Andrew Rodney, a.k.a. The Digital Dog, in when he did the same and then compared the result to a jpg in which he had just let the Relative rendering intent do its thing and clip highlight detail and concluded that he preferred the second. So now I worry about it less, but I still think that in cases where you need to preserve delicate highlight detail that is central to the image, it's worth considering.
