Not sure if this is the right place for this so Mods please move if need be.
Bought the Transcend 32GB 400X to use with my 5D III but my computer would not read them. It sees the card, it sees the folders but when you click on the folder it says insert disk in that drive.
So you might think it's the cards. No if I use them in my 1D they're fine in my computer.

So what is the 5D doing to the cards that my computer doesn't like?

Anyone seen the before. I know the 5D III is new so not many of you have it yet but would appreciate the help.
Thanks.

What OS are you using? Are you shooting Raw or jpeg?

If you are shooting Raw, you will need software that recognizes the Raw format. You can use the Canon utility that comes with the 5D3 to connect with the camera or you can use a card reader. The 5D3 Raw is supported by the latest update for LR4 as well as the update for ACR/CS5.

If you are shooting jpegs, the system should be able to handle the files fine. If you aren't sure about that, switch your camera to jpeg only, and see how it works for you.

BTW, I'm "assuming" you are shooting Raw because that's the typical scenario for the problem you are describing. However, if I'm mistaken, speak up!

Win 7
Shooting raw.
I'm simply trying to copy the files from the card to the hard drive at the O/S level.
File type is irrelevant that point.
This has nothing to do with LRR and or ACR at this point as I'm simply in windows explorer.

BTW LR 4.1RC is out and supports 5D III Raw.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.

Well, I don't know what would cause the "insert disk" message. What folder were you clicking to open when you get that message?

Also, one thing you might try is to switch to shooing a few jpegs and then see if it acts differently. It could be that Windows is having a weird reaction to the new Raw format, although this is the first I've heard of this.

Strange. But you didn't try it with just jpegs?

That message usually means "fscked file system".

Have you tried a format in the 5Dm3?

These brand new cards were formatted in the 5D3.
I will reformat in my 1D or in my computer
I'll do a test tonight and post results.

Use a card reader, don't plug the camera into the PC.

Transcend 400X cards are their cheaper range, MLC memory instead of higher quality SLC. They worked ok in my Canons, but they failed a couple of times in my Nikons so I went to their SLC range. These ones (external link).

Strange
I have that camera (5d3) with that card (32GB Transcend 400X CF) with that operating system (windows 7 64 bit) and have no issues at all. I have had it for about 500 clicks so far and have been shooting raw+jpeg. My computer (HP) has a built in card reader and I always use that.

That brings up their 300X cards. Are they built with better internals?

Yes, 266X and 300X have SLC memory. You can check the Transcend website for each card, it'll tell you. Price is a pretty good indicator though.
