Hey guys, i'll be shooting 2 family portraits this long weekend.

A family with 1 - nine-year-old daughter and a family with 1 - 3-year-old boy and a new born baby.

I need ideas in some good poses.

Can anyone post a link or give me some pointers?

Thanks heaps

A lot depends on the setting. Is this in a home? Outdoors? On a background?

Regardless of what you do, what you are after is a certain geometry in your photo made out of heads. With two people you want a diagonal line. One being half a head higher than the next generally looks nice. With three people an inverted triangle looks nice as does a stair step. With four a diamond, etc. And try not to put any two heads on the same horizontal or vertical plane. As your group gets larger you can resort to repeated patterns of triangles. Here are some examples (not mine)

Another thing to try to do is keep the bodies from facing the camera straight on. It makes people look heave, unflattering, and it screws up composition. Instead, try to keep the bodies at a 45 degree angle off the camera axis. Overlap works well with the edge of the shoulder at the center of the chest of the person behind them. Consider these two shots:

Of course you could always have some fun like this: https://encrypted-tbn2.google.com …koyQxG3uB7-9mIlGEh9lFdyZ4 (external link)

Or you can tell a story like this: https://encrypted-tbn3.google.com …ItU2OTLEWu0bAwN5Q0UpJk_8i (external link)

Also, one last thing. It generally looks best if heads have a very slight tilt and those tilts should lead into the center of the composition or the center of your shape rather than away from it or leading out of the frame.

Granted these aren't hard and fast rules. Just some guidelines for some nice, clean, group portraits.

I am serious....and don't call me Shirley.
Canon 7D and a bunch of other stuff
