Would anybody here know if the Photo Clam 36 Ns with a maximum load of 66 pounds be able to handle a Canon 1D MKIV camera with a Canon 70-200 F2.8L IS MKII lens? Also, for those of you had any experiences with this ball head, what do you think of it?Would you recommend the Photo Clam 36Ns ball head?
Thanks.

I have a 40NS that I hike with and a 54NS that I use in the studio. When you say " handle " I guess my answer would be yes, it will keep the lens-camera combo from crashing to the floor but it will really flop around when you try to adjust it. I consider my 40NS to be marginal with a 7D with grip and the 70-200 f 2.8 Mk II lens. With your camera and that lens I would recommend at least the 40NS, probably bigger.

When I was shopping for a ballhead, I asked Kerry at Really Big Cameras this question and he said the 36NS should be fine for 70-200 lenses. He did, however, suggest that I go with the Pro Gold II ball head, which has a slightly larger ball diameter of 38mm and better construction, if I intended to use longer lenses with my tripod set-up. The reason he gave was to reduce possible vibrations, which become magnified at longer focal lengths. I went with his suggestion and have been happy with the Pro Gold II ballhead on my Feisol 3441S. I have used this combination with my 100-400 lens and the ball head had no problems locking and there was no creep. It is also small enough to fit between the tripod legs when folded.

I have a Markins Q3t with the same setup. The Markins has a 38mm ball, which I think makes more sense for your longer lens. The larger the ball, the less droop of the camera at near vertical orientations, and the less vibration. If the Pro GOld II mentioned above is close to the Markins price, I would get the latter, which has a long, solid track record.
