Ok, just making sure.

I think it was $375, which is about right where most of them seem to be selling at.

I don't really need a EXII though... so I don't know.

I've seen mk1's for around $225-$240. There aren't a ton of reasons to get the mk2 over the mk1. Those lamps can burn out at any time really. And even a moderate impact will shatter those lamps regardless of use.

Hmm..

What are the updates on the EX? Faster cycle time, but what else?

No one answered my question :(

Maybe no one recalls the answer offhand.

As I understand it, it only has radio triggering as an upgrade. I don't think it's any stronger than the 580ex II. Also don't believe the recycling time is improved. But if either of those last two points are wrong, it would be a good reason for an upgrade. For birding, recycle time is everything, even with a battery pack.

I drive on I-75 frequently, and don't see that kind of excessive speeding on a regular basis. The speeders really are in the minority.

Headed up to the Sault. Out in the middle of nowhere the speeds got pretty high. Or down in Ohio. I drove to SSM and back 5 times in about 3 years.

forgot the finer details, but cycle time isn't much improved. Flash power is the same as the mk1. Battery door and foot are improved, and the mk2 now has weather sealing. Most of the improvements are cosmetic in nature.

Now, the big difference is the 550ex --> 580ex mk1. The 550ex and 580exII are just as powerful, but the 1/1 recycle time is 1/2 as long with the 580ex II!!!

You don't speed in Ohio. Ohio popo are no joke. They especially don't like people from Michigan :p

I used to drive from Michigan to Florida on a regular basis, and Ohio was one of the few states where you just don't go more than 5 over.

Longer zoom range over the 580 and built in radio trigger with better menu interface. Is it worth it over the 580 probably not but with all things in photography only you can decide. In terms of over a 420 all of the above including build. Almost like comparing a non-L lens build to an L lens build.

Ah ok, that makes sense. If I decide on a flash and it's between the 580 and 600 I would probably choose the 580 because if the difference is so minuscule I guess it wouldn't be worth it. As long as I can have a strobe or flash that can give me good results with ease of use and whatnot. I guess the jump from regular to an L quality flash is worth it.

I think so; I looked up a bunch of cat-like creatures and that's about what I came up with.

Gotcha. Thanks. :)

If you just need basic flash triggering, want maximum power, and use a battery pack, there's nothing wrong with getting a 550ex. May as well pay the extra $25-$50 for the 580ex mk1 though, as it is a pretty big upgrade. It's lighter, smaller, and has a way better recycle time.
