your mileage may vary with the lens you get, but i've found the 17-40 to be better.

I have 24-105 already and plan on borrowing 17-40 from a friend for my trip. I would only use it for wide shots and it would be 17-30mm range. For anything else I will use my 24-105 which will have Singh-Ray Vari-n-Trio :)

17-40. They both take the same filter size and I use the 17-40 for all overlapping FL if I can. The difference isn't massive but enough to prefer the 17-40.

I've got both on a 5dii and this is my view:

- The 17-40 is sharper in the centre wide open.
- The 24-105 is sharper in the corners wide open.
- Stopped down the 17-40 is sharper across the frame.
- CA control is better on the 17-40.
- I think colour rendition is better on the 17-40.

So, on balance I reckon the 17-40 is the better lens optically, but the 24-105 is no slouch, has IS and covers a very useful range of focal lengths.

@paul

Thanks for this info. I was originally planning on using 24-105mm for most of the shots with V-n-T and keeping 17-40 just for the wide shots with UV filter. Since V-n-T is a triple filter its thicker and causes vignetting at wide side. From my reading on this forum I will be using it closer to 30mm to be safe, maybe as low as 28mm.
