Each year I look forward to April when the Ruffed Grouse begin their spring drumming & mating ritual. This year the first "drummer" I heard was in March... the earliest I have ever photographed them was around April 7th.
This grouse was alternating on two logs in his territory. I call him "GP" as he is a beautiful gray phase Ruffed Grouse, with interesting color imbedded in his frontal and neck feathers.

From his alternate log...

Those are sure beautiful Dave. An excellent capture of this handsome Male. You are the Master of those woods, I am lucky to be able to see the frozen tundra through your eyes and work. Well done my friend.

I look forward to these shots since you started posting them...they're really the only look at Grouse that I tend to get. Great shots, as usual.

Good for you, Dave; it is indeed special to be in the presence of a drumming ruffed grouse; it's a sight to behold.

Super shots, Dave, I love the second last for the crispness of both bird and environment. I hope to get some of these guys too:D

Thanks... No, I don't use a blind for the Ruffed Grouse... too much work as I walk miles to find them... I found one on Sunday and he was buried in brush drumming and I had no chance to photograph him... I would have to revamp his area with a chainsaw

Super catch, Dave. I'm really envious here. I have now made 3 trips to try and catch one with no success. Good for you.

Great shots Dave. I've never seen these let alone seeing them drumming.

Great set. Living in Northern Ontario I know how hard it is to get those pics. Really good work.
