Hi. I'm brand new to the site and brand new to video. I've been shooting stills for a long time but just getting into digital video.

Someone gave me a Canon Vixia HF M40 to play with. I've bought a few basic accessories but I want a directional microphone.

I see the Canon DM-100 is an option:

I wanted to know if there are any other "third party" options out there. I have been recommended to check out RODE mics but I don't know how to tell which or if any of the mics are compatible with my camera.

Just looking for a little help to see what my options are out there. Thank you.

I have the Canon DM-100 on my Vixia. It works fine, far better than the built-in mic.

The advantage to the DM-100 is convenience: it fits on, and communicates through the mini hot shoe on the camcorder. Of course, that also means the audio is being processed by the camera, and you can't move the mic off the camera. OK for what I do with a camcorder - I use a DSLR if I need better quality and more control.

I'm sure you could do better yet with a Rode or even a Zoom H1. I use the H1 also and it works surprisingly well considering how inexpensive it is. Note that any mounts for these will not fit the mini shoe - you will need an adapter (and it will be "cold shoe"
regardless). Then again, being able to move the mic off-camera is an advantage not possible with the DM-100.

The Vixia HF M40 utilizes a standard consumer 3.5mm stereo microphone input, as such almost any consumer level microphone, such as the Rode wil work.
