Hello, I wonder if you can give me advice on the following equipment:

I have a 60D and a 430II flashgun which i can fire wireless using the built in flash. Where is the optimum position for the 430 if Im taking a portrait? What settings should I use? Do I need to use any gizmos to soften/bounce the light?

I realise I might be asking how long is a piece of string but any opening remarks would be well appreciated.

Many thanks.

Try this...

Get a Stroboflash Camera Flip Flash Bracket which is usually available on eBay for a very reasonable price. I got mine used for $15.00.

I used a 550EX flash for these shots but the 430ex or 430EXii would be fine. I bounced the flash off the ceiling which was white and approximately 10 feet high.

I modified the bounced flash with a Joe Demb Flash Diffuser Pro www.dembflashproducts.com (external link).

These are some indoor results from that single flash modified with the Flash Diffuser Pro with the FlipIt postion of the diffuser straight up...

Here are some outdoor results with a stucco wall as background and the flash pointed straight up with the FlipIt portion of the diffuser at a 45 degree angle forward...

I also shot some two shots using the FlipIt straight up...

A good light modifier for the 430EX II is the Lumiquest Softbox III. I've been using one for about three years, and up to about 3-4 feet away from the subject it does a very good job. It's easily portable and inexpensive. Next step up would be something like the Cheetah Qbox (see the POTN Qbox thread). Using the 430EX off camera wirelessly as the key light and the pop-up providing a modest amount of fill (2:1-6:1), the 60D does a very nice job with portraits. You can place the key at 45° or 90° to the side or else on axis but above for butterfly or beauty lighting.
