Problems with USB Extension Cable

Hi all, Since I started on Self portraits (not the 365 project) I wanted to do tether shooting so I went & bought a $4 el cheapo (China make) USB 2.0 extension cable of 5meters. I tested it out with my mobile phone which connected well & didn't have issues, but when I tried to connect the Camera (EOS 550D) with the extension cable, the computer gave USB Device not recognized error. The same happened with my netbook as well which has windows 7 starter edition on it.

Anyone has any ideas on this, please let me know else it becomes a useless investment for me :mad:
