So i've finally bit the bullet and pulled the trigger on the 5D3. I was wanting some advice on which lens combinations I should use..

I currently own a 7d, 17-55 2.8 is, tokina 11-16 2.8, sigma 30 1.4, 70-200 2.8 is ii, 2x TC III

I'm thinking of using the following combinations:

5d3 + 70-200
5d3 + tokina @ 16mm (i.e. make it a prime)
7d + 17-55

In your opinion, should i trade the 17-55 for a 24-70? a part of me says yes and a part of me says no: yes because i'll be able to get a nice creamy bokeh with the 5d3; and no because i'd be losing IS. what do you guys think? are there any alternate combinations you would recommend?

Optics:
Canon 7D | 17-55 | ∑ 30 1.4 | MPE-65
2 x Canon 5D Mk III | 16-35L II | 24-70L II | 70-200L 2.8 IS II | 2X III Extender | 85L II | 100L IS Macro | 8-15L Fisheye

When I got my 1d mkIV, I sold my 17-55 for the 24-70. And I know I will get flamed for this but....I think the 17-55 was much better. I really miss it. That said, I want to be able to shot at that focal length with my big boy camera.

it's definitely an amazing lens. if only an EFS to EF adapter existed

The 24-70 can be used on both bodies.

And is pretty much the same focal length of the 17-55.

I sold mine and went with the 24-70.

You might want to wait a couple of weeks though, once the new mark II comes out the price of the 24-70's mark I will drop I imagine.

I used 7D+17-55 and 5D2+24-70 before. Since I got 1D4 and am waiting 5D3 I still keep 24-70 as my normal shooting style. When my budget is allowed I will get 24-70 II to match with 5D3.

Until I see reviews of production units, I wouldn't put too much weight on performance of the lens. But if you want to talk hearsay, would the possibility of a delay in the launch of the mark II of the 24-70 have an effect on your plans?

do you find that you are now limited by the lack of IS?

That may be the better option: wait for definite reviews of the 24-70 mark ii and save a little cash in the bank for a bit.

Having been spoilt with 2.8, I'd like to continue having a constant 2.8 aperture :)

f4.0 on a FF is 'faster' than f2.8 on crop. Just bump ISO a stop.

Oh really? It would still be nice to have 2.8 though :)

I would feel like I was not getting the full use of the 5D3 if I only used 16mm & 70-200mm. Personally id get the 24-70. If you really like the 5D3, do you really think you'll use the 7D that much?

I went with the 24-70 and honestly, I don't miss IS.
