Oh Look. Sometimes in my work you need to look into the backgrounds and shadows for things that are important that might not be obvious at first.

Sometimes I need to turn up the brightness on my monitor, too. At the usual setting, which is fine for reading text, I could barely see the stripes.

I missed the second male in front, and I thought the nearer figure in the rear was male. She's slim, but I should have paid attention to her hip line. My take was: in-law trouble, or father disapproves of daughter's long-haired boyfriend/husband. The older man's glasses imply that his perceptions are significant in whatever's happening here.

Yes, I think so. Also the clothing. The jackets and scarves are literally protection against cold and nothing else, but this photo has plenty of metaphorical cold.

Yes I agree and very good observations Oh Look. I also like the way the railing because I feel it connects them in a visual way. Even though there is a frosty distance there is still a connection. Glad that this wasn't straightened.

I'm probably going to bring both the spots and the stripes up a bit before I make a print. I don't want to loose that subtle quality and I don't want to make it to obvious but after the comments here and my own experience I think I do need to bring that area up a bit 1/2 stop maybe.

I was going to mention the railing. It's dark, definite, and RIGID, mirroring the opinions or attitudes at the base of their conflict.

But at least they're still walking in the same direction.

The tilt kills this for me. Why is it tilted?

Why not tilt? ?

In my opinion the tilt down towards the bald guy causes all the motion to move in the direction. Tilts can bring a sense of movement to what might otherwise be a very static shot.

I dont hate all tilts, I just dont dig it here. To me, it distracts more than it add in this image.

Certainly entitled to your opinion but in what way do you see it as a distraction? And do you not think that it helps move the eye to the bald guy?

Thanks and yes I was wondering if anyone would see that. ;):D

Maybe I left that a little to subtle. Maybe I'll bring that area up some? I haven't got around to printing it yet. Maybe I'll do that soon and decide after seeing it printed.

I would actually bring the rest of the image down as well as bringing that area up, but I like quite dark and contrasty images with little light bits poking out ... hence why Theatre Photography is ideal for me! This may fall foul of your desire to keep it subtle and less obvious, though ...

The Redux version is an improvement, in my opinion.

Thanks Qwain. Maybe I will play with it a bit more...

Of course, my opinion, but the merit of the image is the humor in it. I think the tilt distracts because there are a number of strong vertical and horizontal lines. Not often do we see tilted verticals or skewed horizontals that are "normal" and therefore, to me, are a distraction.

Yeah, fair enough Shane.

I do think that tilt also adds a bit of a whimsical feel besides creating a tension and movement to the subject. Normal is what I try to avoid like the plague :lol:
