Here is one of mine. I was drawn to the face of this yearling zebra -it felt really soft and sweet. That was the feeling I was going for...

So, I'm "quoting" these pics, because even though I'm not a stickler about "rules" like "Rule of Thirds" or "Golden Mean" or whatever, I'd say that in these three images, "It Works"!

In the first one, well, sure you could have framed the "subjects" closely, so the shot would have been just a candid about the subjects...nothing wrong with a close and personal candid...

And yet, the actual shot communicates so much more, a sense of "place", I dig that!

The second one, well, it just works, again a sense of "place" and the sweep of the gesture, I like it.

The zebra shot, I'd say the same...

However, either of these shots could have been very good if cropped for a more closely "up close and personal" shot as far as I'm concerned -- any comment about that?

A crop on the zebra shot would have worked.

But I think the context would have been lost a little with the first two.

This for me is a classic use of light, shadow, leading lines and atmosphere.

A very well composed image.

I went out to a friends party in a restaurant and took some candid shots yesterday.

It was difficult to get any composed shots because the background was very difficult to manage.

This one is quite a crop, so image quality is not perfect, but I saw the light glancing across his face as he stood in the corner isolated from the other children.

He then just gave me this quick smile, dutifully, because the camera was pointed at him.

It was the corner and the light in the corner that drew my eye.

Discussing these things here and exploring composition is really helping me with my creative shots I feel.

^^I think what really pleased me about this shot, was that I understood everything I was doing.

Even in the moment it took to take the picture.

I think if there was some separation in his hair/head from the background it would help a lot.

Unfortunately that was how the light fell on that one Allen. :-)

Although it is not perfect, I was pleased with what I have been learning lately.

I think this is the strongest of the lot as at first glance it looks like an environmental portrait. :-)

This one is all about the background and the colours streaking through it very subtly.

Without the strong background, the subject matter would stand out in my mind:
