5D Mark III + 24-70 or 24-105 ?

Hi

I used to own the 5D Mark II and bought it along with the 24-70 instead of the 24-105 because i got a really good price for this kit

the 24-70 was and still is my main lens even if i bought a 17-40 and 70-200 to have a complete range...

i never had the chance to test and compare my lens to the 24-105

so far i was really happy with it from an optical quality point of view and my only regret is its weight (no issue about the length to be "limited" to 70 vs 105mm)

now that i have sold the 5DM2 to order the 5DM3

i'm taking this occasion to question myself about selling the 24-70 too in order to get the 24-105 instead ?

i'm a bit lost because each lens has fans

on one hand, 24-70 seems to be better at 24 (less distorsion) and apparently, boked seems to be better too

and on the other hand, people say 24-105 is more versatile and of course more light weight

considering all aspects, is the 24-70 better than 24-105 ? will i really notice a difference if i get the 24-105 for my 5DM3 regarding the quality of my pictures ?

thanks for helping me deciding...

2.8 vs. IS, what you want more? stopping subject motion or your own? 1 stop isn't much in low light.....flash works wonders....don't need 2.8 or IS when you use flash.....it's 6 of 1 or 1/2 dozen of the other....get the one that you think looks cooler.

the 5DM3 will help me in more situations than the 5DM2 thanks to its new specs

but what matters most for me is image quality

i will not sacrifice lighter weight for less IQ

based on this, does the 24-70 wins ?

why don't you get the 24-105 5d3 kit and use them both for 6 months or so and see which you prefer.

I think the 24-70mm II would really show in a super high resolution camera (40+ megapixels). Unfortunately 5D3 is only 22 megapixel? So like Higgs said, choose the 2.8 or the IS.

because at the moment, i only have the budget for the 5d3 alone

sold the 5d2 to get the 5d3 and already put some extra money for the difference

no more budget for trading lens unless selling one to get another one but not owning both at the same time :(

All depends on what you shoot. If you want f2.8 for DOF reasons f4 not going to cut it. Personally I would have spent more money on glass than new body. Most of your stuff ins ig is slow, IMHO.

I played with the 24-105 for a month.... then got the 24-70mm L. The brick is quite a bit superior if you can live with the weight. The weight is a pretty big issue, hence the reason I'm looking for a 24 F2.8 for street photography.

This is no different than any other 24-70 vs 24-105 question and there are TONS of threads on it already, do a search. That camera body you have attached to it really isnt the question.

Well from my experience having both for about 6 months I kept the 24-70. IMO its a better people lens and yes there is less distortion on the wide end and I prefer the way it renders. but if my primary purpose was travel I would go 24-105. Both are good, it was a hard choice even when I had both but to me 2.8 is more useful.

i probably shoot like you, more landscapes and street photography than portraits

as for the weight, i can "live with it" if most opinions say that IQ is superior on the 24-70

i absolutely don't know if my choice was correct regarding getting the new body vs having better lenses first
because so far i was really happy with the 24-70 (except for its weight of course)

my friends and colleagues who shoot a lot more than me usually got 24-105 because they also own a full set of prime lenses

but considering what i shoot, i don't use prime lenses, that's why it seems that i have a different "photo strategy" if i can say that

getting back to my choice of getting the 5d3 is because its new specs will bring better noise control and also higher iso
my thought is these better specs combined with the good iq of the 24-70 would compete with 5d2 + lens having IS, i hope that makes sense ?

sorry guys if i feel like being silly

i wish i had spent more time testing lenses and bodies but i never had the budget to get a complete set of hardware at the same time, it was really difficult for me to make comparisons

Not trying to hijack the thread, but are there big differences in the focus speed of the 2 lenses on the 5D3?

Don't finalise your decision yet, at least wait and see what 24-70II and Tamron can do first......
