I had( well ok nature) a squirrel in a tree near the bird feeder and it was always trying to get a free meal. The local bluejay gang took exception to his choice of dining establishments and they did what I couldn't do, they dive bombed it and would basically force it off the feeder.
There was a thread talking about how aggressive crows were but I would rather take on a crow than a jay for downright mean attacks.

I made a squirrel proof feeder and it worked ok for quiet a while. Then I started going through bird seed at a very fast pace again! I never saw a squirrel on the feeders but it was going fast, then I realized that the food was disappearing overnight and squirrels don't come out at night?.
Then one night in the early hours of the morning whilst getting a drink of water I glanced out of the kitchen window and saw.....a huge raccoon sat on top of the feeder with a young one sat below the feeder. I made improvements to the feeders and now neither squirrel or raccoon can get to them.

It's a dilemna for me with squirrels. On the one hand I see them as just another hungry animal looking for something to eat, maybe with young to feed at this time of year. On the other hand I put food out for birds and the squirrels come along and eat it all while the birds go hungry. What I've been tending to do recently is to just put out small amounts of bird food more frequently, this gives the birds a chance to get something and puts the greedy squirrels on a diet.
I haven't had any complaints so it must be working...:)
