I have updated to the latest firmware on the pixel king and noticed that off camera using a 580ex in hs ettl I get inconsistent fill exposures.

The main subjects are over exposed and its not filling as I would like. I have to constantly adjust exposure in camera flash compensation anywhere from -.3 to -1 1/3.

Have you checked your cameras' settings for Custom Function for Lighting Optimisation. It must be on Disable as it compromises both EC and FEC. It's a Canon thing.

What do you mean by "fill"? A 580EX in ETTL as fill for what light? Is that main light included in the camera's ETTL exposure evaluation? If not, then ETTL is probably inappropriate.

I tried retiring, but gave it up - it's a dead end

Same here, 580EXII and 5D2 (with the light optimisation off). Most of the time it ends up in overexposed shots, by ~1 stop. ?! Constantly have to reduce FEC to -1 or so. I find this happens mostly at wide open apertures. There is no problems at f5.6, but f2.0 will be overexposed (with HSS).

Maybe it is down to me not knowing how to use the Pixel Kings properly, as I only used them a few times and now they collect dust on the shelf. :(

Hi Clive I'm shooting raw and I'm not talking about how the lighting optimization can change brightness.

When I say fill I mean that 'm shooting using hss in the day sun and using the flash to fill in the shadows of the model.

I'm using a 70-200 f2.8 is ii and always shoot in av wide open at f2.8

This is a example of when it properly exposes the photos.
