Here are a few recent favorites of mine:

This jumper got startled by the flash every time, although it couldn't have minded that much, because it stayed in a similar spot for quite a while:

Same jumper but as a profile:

I have not seen this species of jumper in my yard before (red and black stripes--IDs appreciated). It was very difficult to even get this shot, because the jumper was really tiny (this is cropped from 3:1), the spines made it impossible to get closer than this, and the spines seemed to be constantly covering at least one part of the subject.

Desert butterfly from Joshua Tree National Park. This was a bit tricky, because this butterfly would not stop opening and closing its wings. I had to time the shutter as well as I could to catch them when they were all the way open. This is the closest I got:

Nice shots Ryan!

Haven't been onboard for awhile, but I noticed you got the 180mm macro now ... how do you like it? :D

Thanks, Jack. Yeah, I sold my 100mm macro and 200mm 2.8L and replaced them with the 180mm. It was totally worth it; that thing is so much fun to use. It's a tad tricky to handhold, but honestly, so is the 100mm non-IS, so not much has changed there. The biggest downside is the weight; I camped in Joshua Tree last weekend, and I must say that carrying that thing on my neck on an 8-mile hike wasn't the easiest thing I have ever done. Still worth it, though.

I agree the 180mm is not as hand-holdable, nor was it meant to be (it has a tripod collar for a reason) :D

But the difference in quality of bokeh you're getting is noticeable, so I am glad you're enjoying it, as I thought you would!

Cheers,

Jack

Thanks. I love the bokeh on this thing!

Now that I'm starting to try to do more tripod work with it, I'm thinking I may need to get a flexible arm and clamp of some sort, because I'm having a lot of trouble with breezes messing up my in-field flower shots. I have seen people attach an arm to their tripod leg with a clamp at the other end that can hold a flower in place even during a breeze. Seems like that would be pretty helpful.
