My wife has a nail art blog named Smoke and Mirrors which can be found here (external link). I have "photo of the day," she has "nails of the week." The designs I post here are discussed in depth on her blog; you know, how she did them, what colors she used, what materials she used, what tools she used, etc.

I've been taking the weekly photos for her site... so I thought I would start my own thread and put them here.

This probably belongs in the Glamour thread but I don't have permission to post there :(
This seems like the next logical place to post them.

Are you shooting this with direct flash?

If I understand what you are asking...
No I am not using the little pop-up flash that comes on the camera. I am using off-camera flashes. Usually 1, sometimes 2 or 3.
Learning to use off-camera flashes well can turn ho-hum boring images into something special; I love them!
My flashes are cheap, non-Canon, manual flashes. They do not E-TTL or anything else that's fancy. They adjust the beam width (zoom) and they adjust power (from full down to 1/64th power); that's the extent of their function. But you do not need to have a $500 Canon flash to make great photos, you just need to have some knowledge and some imagination.

I've got the knowledge part down... now I need to work on the rest :)

Sorry, that was too short a question. What I meant to say is that are you using any sort of diffuser in front of the flash. Some of the highlights are burning out the details, like image M7 for eg. Have you tried a light tent, or even a page of typing paper rolled into a cone.

I agree you dont have to have branded flashes, I've also tried daylight CFL bulbs for small product shots and was quite surprised at the results....

I like the one with the car keys

Ah, gotcha.
Somtimes I diffuse, sometimes I don't. I use a shoot through umbrella most of the time. I like the softness it gives.
My next purchase or DIY fab job will be a proper softbox. I've been wanting one of those forever.

I completely agree that the bare flash is too harsh. This is all a learning experience for me and I cringe at the first flash photos I took 5 months ago. And in a year I hope I'm cringing at these photos :)

Your wife is extremely talented, as are you in taking these beautiful photographs. Does she do any print advertising, or is it just her blog? The nails are really well done. So nice you can photograph her talent.

Edited to add: OMG! I just looked at her blog. I had no idea!! I am one of these people who have never even had a manicure, much less nails to this extent. How very tedious and complicated. I am blown away.

I'm learning all the time :)

Are those brollies the reversible type, ie did it come with a black cover. Bouncing the flash on rather than through the brollie helps diffuse it even more. I bought one of those ebay collapsible boxes and they work ok. Its either too big or too small!!!

I shoot a lot of pack shots of sweets and chocolates, the boxes are mostly uv varnished and the highlights drive me nuts. So I made a smith victor type table out of T-Slot and some perspex, and bounce the flash. Once you get your lighting formula down you on your way.

I thought these were a cute idea... a little finessing and I think it could be great.
