I will either be sitting in a deer blind shooting whatever life is out there or sitting on the side of a race track shooting between my own racing heats/rounds. I do not anticipate ever hiking with a telephoto.

The percentage sizes are all 60% smaller, with FF! :D

Well, with 200mm on your FF body, an object which is 10' tall and 300' away fills 28% of the frame height. It fills 42% of the frame height with a 300mm lens, 56% of the frame height with a 400mm lens, 71% of the frame height with a 500mm lens. 'Worth it' is still relative to what you are trying to accomplish.

But... what if I use portrait orientation? :)

I think I might be hard to find a lens that will be good for both wildlife and shooting racing from the side lines. The track is going to be closer and a shorter lens will work well. Wildlife from a deer blind is not going to be close and you'll need more reach. How's the 70-200 on the track? If it works pretty well for you, then maybe you should consider a longer lens that most likely wont be used on the track.

I didn't mean to imply it would become my only lens. 70-200 works great at the kart track and most NHRA/IHRA sanctioned tracks. The 500L (and I am debating a 300 as well) will be more suited to wildlife and possibly to road courses should that need arise....
