I am after a monopod for a safari trip. After much consultation of this forum and general advice, I have concluded on the Manfrotto 695CX 5 Section Carbon Fiber Monopod and the Manfrotto 494RC2 Ball Head with Friction Control. Makes sense? Thanks all

If thats your budge max, then sure, doesnt sound like a bad combo. However are you sure you need a head at all on your monopod? What lenses are you intending to use while mounted to the monopod?

When I outfitted my monopod the advise I received resulted in me buying a swivel/tilt head (like the Manfrotto 234 rather than a full ballhead). The reason being was you can accomplish the panning by turning the monopod left or right with your off hand rather than using a ballhead. It worked well for me and saved $$ and weight....fwiw.

I will add too, that if you can deal with the 3" shorter length and .4lbs added weight, the Manfrotto 680B is a much better bang for the buck. That or if youre set on carbon fiber and youre already spending $190, spend another $20 and get a Gitzo: LINK (external link) they are MUCH nicer and stronger!

I was using a Manfrotto 681B monopod but, replaced it with a Calumet 8103 4-section Carbon Fiber Monopod. Tyhe Calumet monopod, although not cheap (lists for $139 USD - I got mine on sale for $99 USD) is quite a bit less expensive and lighter in weight and IMO, every bit as good as the $400 Gitzo.

I use the Calumet 8103 monopod a Kirk MPA1 swivel head which has an Arca compatible quick release. I have RRS L-brackets on all my cameras and the combination works great!

Which Gitzo are you referring to for that much? The GM2541 is one of the more popular and is only $219.

Why did you upgrade from the Manfrotto?
