Any one that have both the 5d3 and 5d2 and a RSS body plate? Can it be used on both?

Looks like RRS is shipping the body plate for the 5d3. I wish it's interchangeable with the grip so I don't have to buy twice :)

Ha ha ha short and sweet.

Yes OP, I believe they are different as all the manufacturers are making new ones for the 5D3.

Well, actually there seems to be an issue with the RRS plate for the new body that could cause a dent at the bottom.

Looks like the L plate is fine, if I were to get one that's the one I'd use.

Someone commented on that thread that 7D L plate fits 5D MK III. It's not, it seems like almost the same size but lip at the bottom does not align properly around the body, so it's not completely flush.

I have a L plate for the grip on pre-order but I ordered this universal for the time being http://reallyrightstuff.com …-CS%3A-Multi-camera-plate (external link) I phoned in and asked a few questions and was told if I had a lens foot plate I could use that for the time being but I didn't want to have to deal with swapping them out so I ordered it. As you see in the picture that slot where the mounting screw is has quite a bit of room to slide the plate back and forth. I have it set so that the screw is sitting at the very back of the slot so there is as much gap as possible between the lip of the plate and the front of the camera body. I just went and played with it and I can easily slip a thick zip lock bag between the front of the body and the lip of the plate (i can fold it in half so its doubled and still slip it between the two but more than that and its a little snug) so it is not rubbing or digging into the body at all and the plate is flush with the bottom of the body.

The RRS design engineer posted this:

"Hello everyone,

This is Matt. I designed the B5D3-L and conventional plate. We are having our local contact bring us his production 5D Mark III, which we will check against our conventional and L-plates in stock. Stay tuned. Some of the pics on this topic here have me concerned, so we have to make sure that our plates are fitting correctly.

A word on the rear lip of the plate. You cannot easily see it, but the contours of the body's bottom rear are spline shaped, unlike nearly every other prosumer body which have a flat bottom and simple radiused back corner. Placing an emphasis of "level and not twisting" over "aesthetics" is what drove our approach.

Honestly, I am more concerned that the plates may be putting the camera body out of level, than the aesthetic of the plate fit itself.

Regarding the pics with the quick level in the shot: do not trust them. To properly measure whether an installed plate is squared up, you need a granite surface plate, 123 blocks, and a height gauge with dial indicator at the very least. It should be measured against something more precise than the gasket, like say, the lens mount. In fact, the surprisingly spongy and poorly installed gasket on the Mark III body we measured was not square with the lens mount at all. The gasket also contributed to the rather "hard fit" design of this particular plate.

Again, stay tuned. We will update this forum with our findings. In the meantime, you are more than welcome to take advantage of our return policy if the fit just doesn't sit well with you. Thanks"

Welp, risk ya take when jumping on the latest of anything. Just wait till the issues with the 5D3 start coming about. Happens every time. That being said, Im sure both RRS and Canon will take care of them (Canon just taking its sweet time about it).

there is quite a discussion going on over on Fredmiranda over this, and I believe there will be updates posted from Matt@RRS.

I held off my order too waiting for what the fix is. I hope Kirk learn from this and design a better one :)

I was also looking at Camadapter plate which has the 3/8 female for the BR strap but I like the fit and finish of RRS from my previous plate. One thing I like about camadaptor is I can use it with and without the grip.

With RRS, I will have to get another for the grip.
