Osprey, hanging in the air, much in the way bricks don't

Was at New Smyrna Beach, hoping for some relaxing in the sun, instead the front that had blown through brought lots of wind. This Osprey did a lot of hovering in the stiff somewhat northerly on-shore gusty more-than-breezes. At one point it was about 20 feet away, almost overhead, and I managed to hold the camera still enough in the (did I mention gusty) wind to get this shot:

T3i, 100-400 at 400mm, ISO800, AI Servo, f/5.6, 1/1250sec.

Cropped a little at the bottom, a fair bit on the sides (was a landscape mode shot), color and brightness boost.

Other shots were less successful. Overcast meant that the sky looks dull, but I could pull out more under-wing detail as a result.

That's a nice Osprey image Steve.
We should all be so lucky as to have a soaring Osprey overhead, and you steadied yourself well to capture it. Well done!

Thanks! You gain a new appreciation for how hard it can be hold steady in gusty winds trying to do those shots. I have several sequences of passing birds (flying into the wind, so relative speed slow compared to normal) where the bird is partially above, behind, below and in front of the frame, all shots missed because tracking it was like playing tug with a golden retriever.

I have a couple more that turned out OK, side-shots of the Osprey, that I'll post later today perhaps.

Thanks very much! I need to browse through my other shots from that day to see if any of the shots of terns, pelicans, etc, are worthwhile. But I still have shots from a trip I made in late-January to process, so it would appear I don't have enough face-time with my PC... ;)
