So, I may have font a little mad. This happens from time to time(ok, it happens often).

I desire a full frame camera AND video, but I really(really) want that pro body...

is the 1Dx really the only way to get it all?

You could wait until the Cinema Eos body is announced. There is supposed to be a video oriented camera coming out that will have the 1D form factor. You just need to be patient.

I suppose I am also concerned about the ability to achieve shallow depth of field with a 1D camera, which I have never worried about before, but now I 'feel' as though the 1.3x sensors are incapable. I don't know why!

I used to have a 1D2 and LOVED it to pieces. But the 35mm sensor feels so much larger!

I don't even shoot seriously, I bought the 1D2 after my 7D, sold the 7D much later, traded the 1D2 for a 1Ds1, and pretty much treat the 1Ds as a rangefinder... albeit a large, heavy, poor battery life range finder....

I suggest you not use the 1D series for any video. Putting it on a rig makes you look ridiculous, hand holding it makes it look shaky cause it's so heavy. a "pro" canon body has the same video quality and function as the 5D Mark II or III. Might as well get that. =P

Why don't you look at the 5D Mark III? If your looking at the 1D series because of the pro "look" and not so much the other features of them - get the battery grip for the 5D3 and that problem is solved :p And themomopan is right in that the quality of video is probably not going to be much different, not enough for someone in the real world to notice anyway - if there even IS a difference.

If you want the DoF abilities then you need the lenses for it, and a FF sensor helps. You don't need a 1D camera body to have that. And if you don't shoot "seriously" why would you drop that kind of cash on a body when you could get everything you actually asked for in the 5D3 AND get some decent glass to go along with it, for the price of just the 1DX :P

Also, I don't think there will ever be a time that anyone anywhere will EVER be able to get on top of the technological curve of DSLRs, smartphones, tablets, computers etc. Right now the 1DX might look like it "has it all" but shortly after there will be another, and another, and another. If you go with that mentality, you will never be happy. Don't get me wrong, I too was looking at the 1DX, but decided that the 5D3 actually gave me every major point I was looking for (the 1DX's 61pt AF system, 6fps, full frame, Digic 5+ processor, etc) and that gave me the extra cash to spend on a sweet L lens to go along with it :)

I guess what Im trying to say is you should evaluate exactly WHY you need/want to spend $7000+ cash on a body. IMO I find its more fun investing in lenses, because they retain their value, and most are not replaced each year unlike camera bodies ;)

Well, the 1Ds is certainly all of those. Get the 1Dx, it'll do it all in a pro body.

If you can afford a 1DX, why not?
