a lot of talk about the lack of DR, and the low pixel density, and if this is really an upgrade over 5d2. I have shot with the 5d2 for over 3 years, and with a 7d for birding, for about 6 months. I have always found the 7d to focus very well against a blue sky, simple background, but put any other background, and it looses its focus easily. Here is a sequence which was not possible even with my 7d. the hawk was gathering twigs to help the nest (the couple already has a nest with eggs in it). Locked on him, and followed him over water, rocks, and gravel, etc. the sequence has about 30 shots. Only one is grossly out of focus, one is soft. of the remaining 28, I would say about 3/4 are in perfect focus, and the remainder show a little bit of blur (not sure if its focus or my panning)
Oh yeah, and forgot to mention, this is done with the 100-400, on a kenko 1.4x at 400mm. My 7d could not do this with the bare lens. all shots are well over 50% cropped

oh, and I have included some of the blurry and slightly out of focus images in the sequence also.
and a link to the original collage.

Pretty ringing endorsement I think...

yeah, I was honestly blown away by it today, so much more so, given that I was using it with an extender, which it is not even supposed to work with. here is one with a crow confronting,

and for the aircraft photographer, a feeble attempt at a passing plane, again with the tc

Your hawk sequence is stunning! To me, the 5D3 is just an amazing camera. It blows away my (broken atm) 60D in every aspect expect flash control. The sharpness of this camera blew me away the first time I used it and when I did my first volleyball game with her, she preformed spectacularly! The AF on her is just SOOOO GOOOD.

Kevin, those are amazing!

My 7D's focus was really nice and was very reliable (all 19 foucs points) with my L and EF-S glasses. The best thing of it was that all focus point were fast, accurate and very reliable. Plus the metering on 7D is more accurate than the older system. But I sold it last year and went for 5DII. This thing is a disappointment in term of focus reliability, operation and performance...This 5DII is just no better than the 5Dc in those departments. well I knew it when I purchased it and I thought I could deal with it as long as the IQ is good. Yes, I am happy with the 5D's IQ, but the more I use the camera, the more I get frustrated about the AF, metering and WB (though WB is not that a big deal when I shoot raw).

To get the best from both worlds... I think I will reconsider to buy the 5DIII...

I was impressed until you added the 100-400 & kenko 1.4 curveball. Now I'm VERY impressed! Nice work.

great shots, but i know the 7d could do the same without the extender.
ive done it with my 60d with seagulls over water.
it is still very impressive and shows the 5d3 is a great upgrade over the 5d2

Too bad we don't have the D800 to compare against in these set of shots. Aparently that's where the talk is coming from.
