I made a post of this in the equipment forum, since I was blown away by the autofocus tracking of 5d3 with a 1.4x converter and the 100-400 lens.
here is a collage I posted, of the sequence of him taking some twigs to his nest

They are excellent, love the last but one. These must have been MF with the combo you describe? Or does the 5D iii AF @ f/8? I didn't think it did?

they are autofocus. taped the pins on the 1.4x extender to make it non reporting, and 5d3 autofocuses like a champ. of course, the autofocus is slowed down some, and 100-400L is not exactly a speed demon when it comes to focusing anyway.
