I'm looking at purchasing the G6 to replace a point & shoot digital camera that I own. I've heard great things about the G6. Looks like the G6 was released in August 2004, does anyone know when the next G-series camera will be out? Should I hold off or go with the G6?

Thanks!

Aleks

Only speculation. They are not likely to introduce a new camera in December or January. And the Pro 1 is older than the G6.

Who knows. Maybe they will roll them into 1 new camera. Conventional wisdom is that Canon doesn't want to encroach on the money tree (dSLRs and lenses). But you would think they have to answer the new IS megazooms.

Time will tell. In the meantime grab a G6 or Pro 1. Just think of all the fun you would miss waiting for "the next big thing".

Honestly, it will be hard for Canon to top the G6. More MP? Maybe. That doesn't necessarily give you better photographs. 7.1 Megapixels is plenty. Maybe Canon have reached the apex with the G-series and the Pro 1.

Well, they could top it by using the Digic II chip. I love my G6, but would love faster focusing and less shutter lag. I've owned my G6 for less than a year, so even if they did come out with a G7 or the like with Digic II, I wouldn't buy it just yet. But it would be a nice potential upgrade.

Yeah, the DigicII would be the obvious upgrade.

I sort of see it being stuck where it is other than that, they probably won't add zoom or IS because they just came out with the S2IS, and they won't improve the lens unless they discontinue the Pro1. Any major upgrade would put it so close to the price of a Rebel XT and there's not much point in making a p&s the same size and price as a XT.

So my guess is the G7 is more or less the same, but a hair smaller and lighter, maybe a slightly bigger screen, and with a Digic II. I can't see them changing the lens much.

bb.

I agree; my G3 doesn't focus nearly as quickly as my SD200 (nor does it do high-fps video like the SD200). I gather the focus speed with your G6 is about the same then.

Whatever the next model will be called, I won't buy it unless it is pocketable, has 3200 ASA, at least a 2.8 lens( 35-70 equiv., maybe even a fixed), tiltable focusing screen and reactivity akin to a DSLR.

There is none available for the moment.
It seems it is easier to provide people with megapixels they do not need than usability in available light.

Ahh...but there is: http://www.popphoto.com …tion_id=5&article_id=1590 (external link) (except 3200 ASA and pivotable focusing screen)

There are two ways of providing high ISO. One is like the XT, which has a larger sensor which produces beautiful, relatively noise free results at high ISO.

The more common way is to just put a few more notches in the menu to allow users to crank up thae ISO on the technology you already have, then do a tremendous amount of noise reduction in camera. The results are obviously not ideal.

It will be interesting to see if Canon will feel the pressure to follow suit with the next generation G.

I'd love to see some form of Image Stabilization this go round! This would extend the G series functionality and versatility in low light situations.

I flunked it because it just did not fire when I pressed the shutter.
Cameras are NOT supposed to be like that.
I can put the camera on a bean bag, I can prefocus or use hyperfocal focusing.
I can take the two steps closer to compensate for a shorter zoom.

But if the thing does not take the picture when I press the button, no way to compensate for a time lag!

Now, Imagine a firearm with that kind of a philosophy...quite a challenge to the marketing dept. As the G-series is now it is not for me. (point final)

So that's what they mean by 7 day waiting period. Might save some lives. :)

While we're making a wish list, I want a G-series with a lens that goes wide to 24mm (35mm equivalent), and an optical viewfinder with paralax correction.

I have to agree. Seems like the next thing would be to add a L lens. But wait, the Pro1 has that. Hum. No need to change the G6, but the Pro1 is due for an update.

In today's review of the Kodak P880, 'Amateur Photographer' magazine writes:
"This is a bridge camera, the likes of which we have seen before in the Konica Minolta A1 and A2, Canon Powershot Pro 1 and 2...."

A simple slip of the tongue, or has the Pro 2 broken cover early?

Waiting periods do no such thing.
