couldn't agree more!
g6 could be the last in it's series, but there'll be pro1-follow ups, they can't just have one pro1 with nothing following it. that'd be silly!

Canon Australia this week marked the G6 as end of life and out of stock

New Model can't be that far away.

Why so?
The G dynasty was founded on a very successful, groundbreaking camera.
Something the Pro1 certainly can't claim to be, either in performance or (crucially for Canon) sales.

Hello guys,

I'm about to pickup my first digital camera and the G6 is on the top of my list as far as P&S cameras go. But, I do realize that a G7, maybe on the way. To be debuted either at the 2006 CES in these next few days or at the upcoming PMA 2006 convention in late February. So I think I'll wait at least till March.

Improvements I'd love to see in the G7 would include: DIGIC II image processing, 2.5" LCD flip screen, more ISO range (e.g. up to 1600...like the Fuji Finepix F10...great entry-level P&S...which I'm also considering), get rid of the redeye problem, improved white balance performance under incandescent lighting using Auto WB, and maybe up the optical zoom to 5x. That isn't too much to ask for is it? :)

Guess all we can do now is sit and wait. Take care guys!

I'm no expert but I love talking about this, heh.

Some seems more likely than others. Assuming a G7 will appear, i'd bet on the DigicII, and along with it better autofocus and white balance and metering, but i'd think the ISO and zoom are gonna be harder to improve because they're limited by hardware cost and size, and there's not to much they could do about those without knocking the camera into another category and price range. I'd say the 5x zoom is more likely than a useable ISO 1600. I think they're pushing the S2IS as the 'zoom-crazy' camera, and "if that's not good enough for you, get an SLR"

Megapixels seem like the big mystery to me... I imagine they'd go to 8 at least, but do they try to squeeze more out of a small sensor? Is it worth it? It seems to me like 8 is a good size for a prosumer camera, you can get nice big prints and the files aren't so big that they're unweildy. But megapixels are a big selling point for consumers, that's always the first question you get when some yokel comes up to talk to you. (the camera equivalent of people asking you "Vespa, huh? How fast does that thing go?")

Couple of things to consider. One is that the G6 is dirt cheap now and the G7 won't be for awhile.

From what I've read, the F10 and others achieve high ISO by running their own version of Noise Ninja in-camera. Heck, anyone could do that. I would be happy with a nice, clear, mostly unprocessed ISO 400.

The best way to get low noise is a large sensor, like the R1. But large sensor means big glass, so no super-zoom.

The argument is Canon won't do a great P&S for fear of disturbing the lens gravy train. In ink jet printer terms, the XT and 20D bodies are the cheap printers and the lenes are the ink jet cartridges. :)

i see what you mean, but at the same time you can't say pro isn't good performance-wice. it's a great point & shoot. maybe you should give it a try!
also, pro1 might've scared both p&s users and dsrl users who wanted a good daily p&s, since the price was so high in the start of it's life. now, the price has dropped, and many people are buying it.

I have a Pro1: the only Canon I've ever owned that I've regretted buying.
I'm not alone in being underwhelmed - that's why the price has tumbled.
In the UK it's now only £20 more than the G6, though it was a good £300 or £400 more (than the G5) at launch.

Just came across a G7 photo on PBase:

http://www.pbase.com/nero_design/image/26934098 (external link)

I got really excited until i saw it was a joke ("G-WIZZ?" ha).

I love the look of it, too bad you couldn't fit a battery or CF card inside it.

Nice work by someone there! Reminds me of a G6 hoax before the G6 came out:

wow, other than the 6mp, i really like that G6, heh. It'd look better in silver, though.

I almost bought one of these instead of the real G6 just based on looks:

IMAGE: http://techdigestuk.typepad.com/photos/uncategorized/optio_750z_front.jpg

(That's a real camera, the Pentax Optio 750, it's relatively comparable to the G6 but I couldn't bring myself to not get a Canon.

Yep Pentax make real camera, unlike the likes of Sony, Panasonic, Samsung and other wannabe camera manufacturers :D

Ha, no, i meant 'real' in the sense that it wasn't a 'fake' photoshopped camera like the links above. i've got nothing against any camera manufacturer... well, maybe sony. : )

Admit it, though, that pentax looks bad*ss.
