Do you know now then why its a good idea to focus to infinity? I've never done that for any of my lenses (unless the focus tube was extended too far when powered off)
Christina, I don't.
As I said, I thought when I read, and began following the procedure, way back when that it was affecting the back of the lens. It wasn't until after I decided to respond to your initial post that I realized this doesn't appear to be doing anything (as far as moving and "protecting" the back element).
Right now, the only benefit that jumps out at me is that focusing to infinity is the only way to retract the front end, since it can't be done once the lens is removed from the body (due to there being no power to activate the focusing mechanism).
Even though this doesn't do anything to affect the back element, I will still focus to infinity, if for no other reason than to shorten and compact the overall length of the lens for storage. At least now I'll really know why I'm doing it.
