Don't be so worried about it. Take a felt tip marker, draw a little mark next to the red dot on the side of the lens so you can see where the red dot is on the back side (who knows why Canon put the dot on the back where you can't see it and not on the side where you can) and then you'll align it perfectly every time.

The back element of the 85L II is reassuringly flat after fitting a home made filter holder to the 17 TSE.
